how many place settings did you register for?

FinallyMrsT, on July 28, 2015 at 8:02 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 41

We finally created our registry this past weekend (and I was right to dread it -- it was pretty much an awful experience for me, as it basically highlighted all of the kitchen shit I should be using but don't cause I'm lazy and incompetent when it comes to cooking). We opted for 8 place settings, but now I'm rethinking that. Seems like 8 should be the bare minimum, but since we're going for a nice set that we can use with company, 10 or 12 might be more appropriate. Not that we even have 8 chairs for people to sit in, but we can cross that bridge later! lol

How many did you ladies register for? All of the past threads I could find were pretty outdated; based on what I did read, though, it seems the average number of place settings was definitely 8 in 2010, but then up to 10 in 2013. There is so much data packed in these archives, I swear...About a million wedding studies waiting to happen!

I didn't register for china because my mom has a ton of it. For the cheaper, every day plates I registered for 10 because its everyday. What if we drop one or whatever lol and they are cheaper lol

We registered for fiesta ware... Pretty much every color Kohls had. And we got most of them. Not super fancy but we have at least 10 of them now and love it. Plus, if one breaks, we have lots of extras.

We wanted 12 (we have service for 12 with our dishes), but we found an insane deal on Oneida flatware for 16. We really like to entertain, although we have a very small dining area! Once our house is built, that situation will hopefully be solved. I like the idea of having service for more so that even though it's just the 2 of us, we hopefully won't have to run the dishwasher as often.

Think about your lifestyle and what you think is the biggest group you will be entertaining. Last year we had 10 people for thanksgiving and that didn't include the whole family. If you will be hosting family gatherings in the future more might be better. But if you aren't the type of person to entertain that isn't likely to change just because you got married.

I haven't put any on the registry yet, but I'll probably go with 8 or 10...

We're registering for at least 10 because, even if I don't host a lot of dinner parties, I do want to be able to have our parents, siblings (we each have one) and their SOs over and have matching place settings for everyone.

Hm...I guess I should clarify that we were hoping for something versatile that would be sturdy enough for [careful] everyday use, but also nice enough for entertaining. We agreed on a set at Crate and Barrel that worked for both, but now I'm having second thoughts and thinking of doing a separate registry just for dinnerware at Anthropologie.

I registered 12 place settings each in formal china and everyday dishes. Between the two of us, my FH and I have 9 children (this is 11 place settings on a daily basis). We also have a very large family, and if everyone (parents, siblings, etc.) came for a holiday I would not have enough china for everyone. With 12 place settings I will cover the adults, but the kids would need to use the every day dishes. We love to entertain both casually and formally. The registry check lists I found indicate you should choose between 8 to 12 place settings.

We picked the Mikasa Swirl set (can double for both - everyday use and nice enough for entertaining - at least for us). We registered for 12 place settings, in case we ever host a holiday.

My aunts told me that my grandmother had china, she never used and they were going to give it to me. My other aunt told me she had the same set and was going to give it to me too. I haven't gotten any of it and they offered it over a year ago. I'm not bothered by that though - I think if I ever find that I need china, I'll just go purchase it.

My grandma gave us her mothers China, so we didn't have to worry about that. I believe it has 8 place settings, but honestly it's still boxed until we can get a china cabinet. I honestly think 8 is plenty.

I only did 8 as well. Now you have me rethinking....what if we have a lot of company. Will I have to do a ton of dishes, what if one breaks? FH got our current set of fish dishes (yes each piece actually has a different fish on each plate) at a garage sale. It's time to upgrade.

Girls (to add to this conversation), what kind did you register for?? I did Sophie Conran (very similar to the Mikasa Swirl).

I registered for 8 place-settings. We've been together for six years, and lived together for three... we've never had more than 2 other couples over at one time for dinner, but our dining table seats 8, so we went for 8.

Our china is Lennox "Chirp", and is dishwasher and microwave safe. After years washing my mom's china twice on Thanksgivings - once to wash off dust from storage, once to wash it clean after dinner - I swore i'd never buy dishes that couldn't go in a dishwasher!

Remember you have to *store* all the places ettings that you get - so if you've not hosted more than 6-8 people for dinner in the last two or three years, balance the idea of getting all your place settings 'free' with the need to store it all - and if you're choosing a non-dishwasher safe pattern, remember you'll have to hand-wash every piece, which makes it unlikely you'll use it unless you "have" to - which pretty much defeats the purpose!

4? Lol. I usually don't have many people over and when I do, we use paper plates. #fancy ETA I have my great grandmothers China upstairs but it's still in the box, I don't have a china cabinet yet...but I also don't think I'll use it. I've never eaten off of China in my life

I didn't register for fine china. We did register for a set of fancier dishes though that we will use when guests come. We registered for 12 place settings. My shower was this past Sunday, and we received 10 out of the 12. That's perfect.

We didn't register for china at all - we just picked out a nice, sturdy, white every day set. We registered for 12 place settings for that and for flatware. It's nice to have wiggle room to break or lose a few and still have a lot.

So If we have the amount of kids we want our family will be at 5. Just parents come over that would be 7 worth one set 9 with both sets. I hosted thanksgiving, Xmas and Easter each of those we had over 20 people. I want everyday China so I will be registering for 2 sets of 12.

I'm not into China at all, so we opted for the more informal everyday plate sets. I think we chose 2 sets of 4 each, just because the cost of the plates were super expensive. I don't even plan on getting them the day of anyways, so we'll just buy them with our wedding gift money afterwards.

16 because we were planning on lots of family get-togethers.

With breakage, I think we're down to 13 or 14 and the pattern has been discontinued (something to keep in mind).
