how many place settings did you register for?

We finally created our registry this past weekend (and I was right to dread it -- it was pretty much an awful experience for me, as it basically highlighted all of the kitchen shit I should be using but don't cause I'm lazy and incompetent when it comes to cooking). We opted for 8 place settings, but now I'm rethinking that. Seems like 8 should be the bare minimum, but since we're going for a nice set that we can use with company, 10 or 12 might be more appropriate. Not that we even have 8 chairs for people to sit in, but we can cross that bridge later! lol

How many did you ladies register for? All of the past threads I could find were pretty outdated; based on what I did read, though, it seems the average number of place settings was definitely 8 in 2010, but then up to 10 in 2013. There is so much data packed in these archives, I swear...About a million wedding studies waiting to happen!

For all the weddings I've been to, couples seem to register for between 12-14 sets - more so because they'll have ample extras in case pieces get broken over the years. The problem a couple of them have run into is storage! This is a lot of china to store. Be sure you have the room before you request a ton of china. We haven't registered yet, but we'll probably end up requesting 16-18 sets because we have big families and I've taken over hosting the holidays. It's all about the amount of guests you anticipate hosting plus a couple extra settings to account for breakage.

We registered for 12 but we got 14. It's just the two of us but I like to host Thanksgiving and other get togethers so I'm happy to have a couple extras.

Registered for 12 for fine china. didn't register for everyday since we are just going to rotate our current plates. The current everyday plates are going to get donated/sold or something since they aren't a complete set anymore. The nicer plates ( set of 8) we have will become our everyday plates.

I figure that if all of the adults in our immediate families came over we would have 12, the kids can use the everyday plates

We did 12 of both regular dishes and china. Received all the regular dishes (which we made sure were still nice enough for holidays, etc. because we didn't expect to get any of the china although we did receive 4 sets). We based this number off of the number of people in our immediate families who we usually have over altogether.

    8 regular dishes, 0 china.

The majority of our get together are bbq style, and for those that aren't, I personally find the white, rimmed dishware more impactful than patterned china, and the table just looks slightly more modern.

Also, a set of four place settings was like, 25 bucks. I can replace forever.

I think people should consider how often they entertain. FH and I will probably only register for 8-12.

We did 10, but ended up with 12!! We went with Noritake which we could use for everyday or for our family dinners. We plan on having a lot of family functions in the future and FH is one of four brothers!!

I did 8 of the "swept" pattern from Corelle. I love that their stuff is light and chip-resistant, so it's great for every day use. I didn't register for any china. We don't do any entertaining beyond the level of frozen pizzas and beer.

I'm now considering another set of four just in case some end up breaking over the years. I would hate to not be able to purchase more in the matching pattern.

Just think about your families. If you ever want to host Thanksgiving or another holiday, how much would you need to have a plate for everyone? Then add two if you want to be safe and account for broken plates or chipped bowls.

We did twelve, because we registered for Corelle sets and they come in 4 place settings per box. So we registered for 3 boxes. Also, our dining room table seats 12 when extended completely, so that's another reason. We have been living with my two sets of Corelle, so 8 dishes, since I bought them in 2008. Since then, two have gone missing. You wouldn't believe how fast 6 plates are used up. We had my aunt and uncle over for dinner one night, so four people total, and we ran out of dishes because we had appetizers and desserts and needed a dinner plate to move the grill food over, etc. So 12 seems like a good number where you won't be rushing to find clean plates if you have 8 people total!

Our everyday plates we just got 4 but the fancier(non china) plates we asked for 12. We like having parties and I would love to give people plates that dont have Eyeore or Winnie the Pooh's face on them Smiley smile

My grandma is giving me her china and I am pretty sure that is a setting of 12.

Anyone else have a problem with wanting to change them all the time? I've probably looked at my registry at the plates and keep changing them. I think I've made my final decision, I just wish they would come in separates since I hate having mugs. We have our own fun mugs. Anyways, I'm think about getting 8. It just sucks because I feel like those 8 mugs will either be in storage, or donated. Maybe I should get a different set...

Thanks for your input, ladies! I think I'm going to go with 10 for now and possibly add to the set myself later on.

@Jenja -- I cannot for the life of me make up my mind! It's been 4 days since I even started this and I'm consumed with thoughts of dinnerware alll the time. I'm tired of thinking about it, but I just can't stop. Ugh. I guess I'm lucky in that all of the ones I'm considering come separately so I'm skipping the matching mugs and getting a different set...

I registered for 12. Even though 99% of the time it's just the two of us, we need that many. I don't run the dishwasher until it's full or we run out of plates (we currently have 8), whichever comes first.

@Jenja... I feel you on the mugs. Neither of us drinks coffee, so we have no use for them. I should donate them so they don't take of cabinet space.

I registered for 12 everyday sets in case of breakage. I didn't even see them in person before I put them on the registry, but we have received 6 already. I'm a huge tea drinker and FH likes it occasionally, so I wanted the cups and saucers in addition to the regular plates. They are from Crate and Barrel and I love them. Smiley smile We decided we didn't need any formal china and the prices were ridiculous, so none of those made it on to the registry.

Keep in mind that ironstone is heavy. I can not lift a stack of 8 into the cabinet over my head! Kind of wish we had registered for Corelle instead.

Footed cups catch the water in the dishwasher. Minor irritation to have to dump the water out and dry them before putting them away.

If it has a pattern in the middle, that will help hide dark marks/scratches from knives.

If you intend to keep it forever, make sure it is a pattern you won't grow to hate.

We are planning on registering for 12-14 everyday plates. I don't want to run out of plates and have to run an empty dishwasher. I think I will also be getting one of my grandma's sets of china because she doesn't like it anymore. I found Correlle plates that I love!
