How many photographers/videographers should you hire for your wedding day?

Kylee, on July 16, 2020 at 5:47 PM Posted in Planning 1 13

I know my wedding is definitely farther away than others, but I really enjoy planning and deciding things early so I am not as stressed closer to the date. I was wanting to ask this about the ceremony and reception.

How many photographers and videographers should you hire for your big day? I had a friend who had two photographers but no videographer so I am not sure on that part. The reason I am asking is because I felt like it would be impossible for one videographer to capture every single moment of the day and figured that in every wedding video I see that there just has to be another videographer working with them as well. I could of course be wrong but I just wanted to ask just in case Smiley smile please let me know below how many of each you recommend!

Thank you in advance!

It depends on your guest count and how much you want to spend. I had one photographer and didn’t feel 2 was necessary. A videographer would have been nice but after seeing some wedding videos I didn’t feel it was worth the expense esp since I was already way over budget.

We had two of each and wouldn't have it any other way. Having two photographers was a must and it allowed us to do our photos in half the time since they split up between our two bridal parties. We met with one videographer who set up a camera on a tripod that stays stationary, and then they move around with the second camera in order to capture more angles. I would at least look for someone that can do that.

Many times, one videographer will set up an unmanned, stationary camera to help capture footage. I originally didn't hire a videographer, though am now considering it. We hired one photographer and paid him extra to bring a second shooter to help capture photos. The photos are the most important thing to me, which is why we wanted the second shooter there as well.

I feel like two of each would be ideal. We actually had 3 photographers and 1 videographer. It was supposed to be only 2 photographers but they sent an extra "trainee" and I had no complaints about an extra photographer! 2 would've definitely been adequate but I was grateful for the third.

As for the videographer, I REALLY wanted 2, but I just couldn't find any videographer that offered a package with 2 videographers that was within budget for me, and didn't also include a ton of extras. The only videographer that I found that fit into our budget (and who would agree to only come for a few hours and we could pay by the hour, rather than other ones who were charging for like 12 hours worth of time when I didn't need or even want that much!) worked alone, so I just made do with that and figured 1 was better than none, because that was basically what the choice came down to at that point. He did a really great job! Despite being only 1 guy, he had 3 cameras. He set up 2 cameras before the ceremony started, and then walked around with 1. So this way we got 3 different angles, even though he was only 1 guy. Unfortunately, the angle that showed my husband's face when I walked down the aisle was not ideal (though, there really would've been no better way for him to set up that camera without being in the photographer's way, so I know he did the best he could). That's my ONLY complaint about not having 2. If we had a second videographer, that angle would've been a little better. But regardless of quality of the shot, the most important thing is that he got the shot lol. And our video is just so incredible, that one tiny grievance is pretty insignificant. It's not enough to make me regret not spending double the money to have a second one.

Basically, I think at least 2 photographers is a necessity (since photographers can't set up cameras to just roll from a different angle like you can do with video) and 2 videographers is ideal, but I think you'll be fine with 1.

It really depends on how large your wedding is. We are having a small wedding, so we are only having 1 of each. When I had my consultation call with my photog & videographer, I told them about the wedding, the number of guests and what I was wanting from the photos & video, and they both suggested just one person (although my photog will have an assistant with her). I would talk to your chosen vendors and see what they would suggest based on the details of your wedding.

We had two photographers and then she also brought an assistant to roll film. We didn’t have a videographer.

We had two of each. Both were husband and wife teams. I would definitely recommend two of each because two are able to capture photos or video from different angles. Some of my favorite photos were taken by our second shooter.

It all depends on what pictures you want taken at your wedding. We hired a photographer for wedding but he would have to bring an assistant with him bc of what the pictures we wanted him to take at the wedding. We didn't have a videographer at our wedding.

Discuss this with them during the interview process. Some have a team and others work independently.

We had 2 photographers, well worth it! We didn’t have a videographer but I would think 1 would be fine.

I would say no more than 2 each. There comes a point that they must work well together too, and I would consider asking your hired photographer or videographer if there is a photographer or videography team that they work better with or could recommend.
