How many hair & makeup trials did you do before finding your stylist?

LSC_sf, on March 13, 2014 at 9:19 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 11

Hey all! I'm knee deep in researching different hair and makeup artists. In my area the trials are around $200-250 for hair and makeup combined which can add up!! I've had one so far just for hair and then my makeup trial was before my engagement shoot so I'm waiting for those photos to come back and see how they turned out.

For those of you who found someone, how many hair/makeup trials did you do before finding someone?

For hair, did they do the exact style you wanted? I ask this because my first one spent 3 hours on my hair alone because she was trying different things to get a good style going…it took so long that she ended up saying "on the day of we'll do this and this and add more product" and it made me nervous not seeing the totally touched up final product! I have thick, long, curly hair and don't want a full on updo (side swept look inspiration going on here) and really don't want to chance it on the day of.

Thanks in advance for your input!

I only met one. I had done a lot of research and loved her work.

She did what I wanted my hair to look like I ended up not liking it and we picked something else.we didn't do it completely 100% like it will be on my wedding though, it was going to come out anyway because FH isn't allowed to see it. But her just doing part of it gave me enough confidence to know shed do great day of.

I don't have a mua/hair stylist yet, but from what I'm seen posted around here, it seems like most ladies pick someone, do their trial, and stick with that person. Trials ARE expensive, and so it would suck to have to pay for more than one.

However, I can remember at least one lady who was unhappy with her first trial, and was considering to either arrange for a second trial with the same person, or just go with someone else entirely. And then one bride who's mua was totally unprofessional during the trial and following, and so she also decided to go with someone else.

I did one hair & make up trial. I really liked the make up and the hair was okay. My hair wasn't exactly what I wanted and it didn't hold as well as I thought it should. I am going to do one more hair & make up trial with another set of artists/stylists. I agree it's very pricey but I want to do a second one to compare it to my first vendors.

Your icon is of the GG Bridge. Are you also from the Bay? If you are, the two MUAs I looked into are Charrie Lanette Professional Make Up & Jamie Mays Freelance Make Up Artist. You can find both of their work on Instagram or Facebook. The hair stylist that I am doing my next trial with is Linda Taing Independent Hairstylist, also on Instagram & Facebook

I'm going to have my regular stylist do my hair. I'm still debating if I want to have a veil or a bird cage. Make up trial, I ended up going with the 2nd person I tried out. The first make up trial was at Sephora, I just had to spend $50 on product. The second make up trail was complimentary at I was happy about that!!!

I did two and booked my second MUA. The first was a disaster and I'm so thankful I did a trial. She talked a good game but on the day of the trial she couldn't get anything the way I wanted. She kept saying - well on your wedding day it won't look like this. And then mentioned doing some research on my hair type (it's suuuuper curly and frizzes at the mention of water). I booked a second trial even though it hurt (because those suckers aren't cheap!) and she did a MUCH better job! For one - when I took a picture you could actually see that she made me up. And she has another person that does hair and she did a fantastic job with my hair. It drizzled that evening and I still had some of my long tendril curls intact and prior to that we already made a plan for how to get a better hold the day of (using clip in extensions and making sure I have day old hair - dirty hair holds better). Based on what they did we were able to discuss what tweaks to make for the day of but I was confident with the look she achieved for the trail that she would nail it the day of. There was one other MUA on my list I would have tried if that second one didn't work out and I still think about her a little - but I'm happy with who I booked and didn't want to spend another penny on trials.

edit: Hi date twin Smiley smile

Thanks everyone! It's helpful to hear how your experiences went and how it turned out. I feel better knowing that you may still tweak your hairstyle on the day of or are confident that you'll get it on the wedding day!

Mrs. Simmons that's great your second makeup trial was complimentary!! What a deal!

Future Mrs. Pichon: Hi date twin! Thanks for your input! My hair is pretty curly and can frizz easily too and that's what I'm nervous about. There was a few "on your wedding day" sayings going on so I started to get nervous about how many things she would have to fix. She took notes down but my trial took so long that she didn't put too much product in or touch things up. It looked okay, but I guess it made me wonder about booking a second trial. I probably will (and yes, they aren't cheap!) and at least to have something to compare it to. I'm more concerned about my hair than the makeup for all those photos and trying to tame the curls/frizz!

Melanie: I am from the bay! I'm in SF and I'll look into those two, thanks! I'm probably going to book a second hair trial too just to have someone to compare it to and so I'm not wondering and worrying until the wedding day. I may have another second trial with this one if I decide to go with her before the wedding.

Oh- I should clarify- The MUA I booked was not the same as the MUA that did my first trial. She couldn't get a single thing right or even close so I had zero confidence in her ability to get close to the look I wanted. So I picked a different MUA and she was amazing. She did my makeup while her business partner did my hair. Helps to have two people working on you at the same time - they were done in no time!

I did two makeup trials and two hair trials. Doing the second makeup trial I realized I loved the first trial so I booked that artist.

I was unhappy with both hair trials but I can't handle the idea of more trials because they are too darn expensive. I wanted a chignon but after two failed tries and not wanting to try other stylists, I have decided to book with one girl and just have my hair down and curly. I'm not doing another trial and just hoping for the best day off! I know this is a risk but Im not going for anything fancy anymore.

I'm a hairstylist so one of my co-workers will most likely be doing it, as far as makeup I have no idea!

If the stylist spent 3 hours and kept beating around the bush LOOK elsewhere! But keep in mind that everyone's hair is different, and if you see something you love, your hair could be a completely different texture so it won't look 100% like the pictures. Also, if you find a good stylist, they will/should make slight suggestions on what will look best with your face structure and features. Just keep your head up and you will find your MUA and Stylist that will make your day even more special! Smiley smile

I know, the trials are so much! I'm going to go ahead and book a second one and hopefully that will help me make the decision between the two and be a good comparison of the first! Thanks for the advice Jessika, that's a good thing to keep in mind about my crazy hair and that it probably won't look exactly like my inspiration photos Smiley smile.
