How long should the reception last?

Nicole, on October 12, 2011 at 1:17 PM Posted in Planning 0 35

I ask this because a DJ wants to charge me $500 and says my recptions should only last 2 to 2 1/2 hours...REALLY? It's Memorial Day weekend and I think that he is saying that because he wants to be able to DJ at a club later that night. I had another DJ tell me that he charges $450 for four hours. Now I really like the $500 DJ and I am willing to pay the $500 but NOT for such a short period of time. So I want to know how long does a good and fun reception last?

Pfft that sounds like BS to me. Including dinner, I think the reception should be at least 4 hours. If he can't accommodate you, tell him you will find someone else who will.

4 hours for sure. You should tell him your will to pay that amount, but you want a better time amount!

Most receptions are 4 or 5 hours. SOme shorter Some a little linger but 500 for less than 3 hours is a negative. I say go with the other dj

4-5 is the standard for receptions. I would go with the DJ who will give you the most time for your money. AS LOng as the quality is good. you dont want someone to rush through things to be elsewhere.

Mine was 3.5 hours for budget reasons, but we also had an after-party at the hotel bar.

He pulled those 2 hours out of a hat and wants to be able to book something else on that same day.

If you think about dinner, first dance along with all the dances you have planned, cake cutting, and speeches/toasts along you're looking at 3 to 4 hours.

Our DJ usually charges $750 for a full reception coverage (beginning with cocktail hour, dinner music, then dancing making the whole thing last at most 8 hrs) but he is giving us a deal since he lives by our venue and priced us at $450. Our reception with everything will be between 6 to 7 hours.

I'd say they are probably trying to book other events since its such a popular weekend.

Yea that sounds like BS. Our DJ charges between $800 and $1100 depending on how long and where. But we know him from when my FH bounced at a bar our DJ played at so we're getting him plus kareoke (sp) for 5 1/2 hours for $300.

Our reception was 5 hours. 2 - 2 1/2 seems like a quick reception to me, but I guess that depends on the type of reception you are having. We have been to weddings where the reception was a cake only reception that lasted about an hour
