How long is your reception?

Christina, on February 22, 2011 at 11:41 PM Posted in Planning 0 32

Hello, everyone!

My fiance and I just put a deposit on a location that has us a bit concerned about our timeline. We would do the ceremony and reception at the same location, and our timeline would be something like the following (keep in mind this would be on a Sunday of Memorial Day weekend):

5:30-6 -- ceremony

6-6:30ish -- cocktail hour while we take photos (we'd do a first look to get some of these out of the way ahead of time)

6:30ish -- guests start eating, we jump in the buffet line later once our photos are finished

8pm-ish -- dinner ends, dancing begins

10pm -- we get kicked out!

So, what do you think everyone? Is 10pm too early to get kicked out of the venue? It's in a neighborhood and it's outdoors, that's why things have to end early. Is this a deal breaker? How long are your receptions? Or, more importantly, how long is the dancing portion of the evening?

P.S. We intend to go to a bar afterward. Does that change things or just complicate things?

Thanks everyone!

Only 2 hours of dancing??? i would def recommend having an after party somewhere else. most receptions i've been to have at least 3 hours. a friend of ours had a 6 hour reception. reception time really depends on your venue & guests, so again... i would def set something up.

    our wedding timeline was this:

5:10-5:45: ceremony (was supposed to start at 5)

5:45-6:45: cocktails for our guests while we went & had pictures

6:45-7: our time to chillax before the reception

    7-11: dinner & dancing

some of the older folks left around 9ish while others went to the hotel bar afterwards, including ourselves.

Hmm, that does seem a little short to me. Our reception is 5 hours total (including a cocktail hour). If you all go to a bar it might make it alright though.

Our reception will be 6 hours, but it also on a saturday. If you like the venue enough to keep it you can always find a place for an after party. Being that it is a holiday weekend and people usually have the Monday off, they might be more willing to stay out and party later than they would on a normal Sunday.

Ours is very similar as well, but held on a Saturday. Everything will be at the same venue.

    4:30-5:00 Ceremony

    5:00-6:00 Cocktail Hour

    6:00-10:00 Dinner/Dancing

We have the option of booking additional time after 10:00 if we would like. Our DJ is creating the timeline of events but indicated that the party/dancing would get started at 7:00. My FS already said he wants to keep going so I don't blame you for wanting to extend the celebration!

Congratulations on your engagement and welcome to WW!

Our location requires us to be out by 11, but we'll probably end at 10 so the venue can be cleaned up, but we have full intentions of going out later! Smiley winking Of course, that's partly because we don't intend to have alcohol at the wedding and it will likely just be our bridal party following us, but whatever! Make the night last as long as possible, right?

Oh well, our reception will only be 3 hours and for me that's more than enough, if I have to I will add maybe an additional hour.

    4-4:30 guest sitting

    4:30-5 ceremony

    5-6 cocktail hour

    6-9 reception

Considering that your reception is outdoors, and may disturb others, since u said it's in a neighborhood, 10pm may be an ideal time for you. Also you are starting cocktail/dinner early, so you should be fine Smiley smile

My reception is 7:30-12am in a ballroom. And it's on a Sunday too!

it's always fun to have an afterparty Smiley smile

Our reception is going to be 4 hours, I think your plan to go to a bar afterwards is a good idea.

My reception is only 2.5 hours.. It's only finger food and cake. No dancing, more like a extended cocktail hour (soft music playing from a ipod). We are only having about 50 guest. But do plan on loading the partying type guest into a party bus for a night on the town. Doing something very different.... I'm also planning on doing online RSVP's. Just call me the new age/digital bride to be.

    Our time line is:

    7 PM ceremony

    7:30 cocktail hour

    8:30 dinner and dancing

    12:30ish out the door

All of our vendors, including the venue and DJ, will accommodate us until 2 am. I'm an early to bed kind of girl, and since we are having brunch the next day at 10 am, I feel like midnight-1ish is late enough.

Ours is like that as well. Can you start the ceremony a bit earlier? Like at 5?

    We are doing 5:00-5:30 ceremony

5:30-6:30 cocktail hour (will probably be less)

    6:30-Reception, etc... till 10:00.

A quick timeline for us is looking like this:
    4:00 ceremony
4:30-5:30 cocktail hour (while we take pictures)
5:30-10:00 dinner and reception (this includes first dances, cake cutting, boquet/garter toss, toasts, and of course dancing)

Our wedding is on a Sunday night.

And we are having our ceremony and reception at the same place.
