How long before the wedding should invitations be sent?

Emma, on December 31, 2013 at 10:36 AM Posted in Planning 0 5

Hi there. My wedding is in June and I'm wondering when should I send the invitations, since I have a lot of family that live outside New York. I have family in Washington, Boston and even outside the USA. And they would have to plan ahead of time, buy an airplane ticket, etc... So when should I send them? I already told my family about the wedding but I need to give them their invitations with all the details. When is the best time to send the invitations to those who are far and need to plan ahead of time? ANd also those who live in New York like me? Is a month good for those who live near? I don't want to send them too early, as they might forget.

You could send save the dates to your OOT guests that include hotel and travel info. The invitations can go out 6-8 weeks prior to your wedding.

Invites go out 6-8 weeks before -- much sooner and people forget, they go in the "I'll do it later" pile, they get lost, you don't get responses...

Send out Save the Dates, even email STD's with website info where they can look at hotels and start planning. The only real "details" they need right now is the date and the city they are flying to.

Welcome to WW, looks like you've been on for a bit, so I hope you'll change that avatar (the rings) to ANY unique picture we can remember you by! Here's how:

We're date twins! I sent my Save the Dates awhile ago, the first week of December. Our invitations will go out April 7th with an RSVP deadline of May 7.

All of our travel information is on our website and directed people to that on both the save the dates and invitations.

Since your wedding is in the summer I would send them out a little eariler. Many people will be going on vacation in the summer months. Sending the invites earlier may let the guests alter their vacation dates.

I'd do Save the Dates. Only a handful of my people are coming from out of town, so we let them know of the date personally. But if you have a lot, I'd do save the dates now and then the invitations 2 months out.
