How do you NOT look like you're in highschool the day of your wedding?

Gina , on September 28, 2010 at 9:46 AM Posted in Planning 0 23

I am 21 years old and I get told on a daily basis that I look like I'm 15. Everyone tells me that that'll be great in twenty years, but I don't want to look like a child bride on my wedding day! I've even considered delaying my wedding a year or so just so I might look older. It makes it hard because my fiance' is 26, but he looks older than that. I'm very self-conscious about how young I look and am just looking for some tips or tricks on how to look more "mature" on my special day.

Good call, Brian. The makeup artist can be really helpful. Also, when you look for a dress, don't get anything that might look like a prom dress. Tell the attendant that you want something that will look a bit more mature. That can be a big help too.

    Good luck!

Play around with different hair styles too. Sometimes I look younger based on what I do with my hair. Go for a more mature style there too.

This exact problem was actually on a tlak show I watched on Sunday. It's the most common concern with people with rounder faces. THe MU on the show said to select darker shades of lip gloss/stick, stay away from pinks, and that you look younger because your face doesn't have as many angles, because it is round. So she took a darker shade of foundation and 'sculpted' cheek bones. So, i think voicing your concern to a MU in your area would be a great idea!

Thanks for all the great tips. That's all stuff I should've thought of, but I guess I thought there wasn't anything I could really do that would make that much difference. I just needed to hear it from other people! I'm getting excited now lol!

Hmmmm ok. I looked at your profile. Id say something up doish with your hair. use some adult based makeup... like have a professional give you some pointers. Go to ulta or mac or something and voice your concerns. They can give you tips for adult look makeup... hmmmm you are super cute but do look young! not a bad thing. what does your dress look like?

I agree with the hair, a nice side chignon is sophisticated without being matronly. also remember, tho, that you should look like yourself. anyone you are inviting to the wedding should know how old u are and you dont want to look back at photos and say "who is that??"

I haven't picked a dress out yet, but I'm looking for something like this. I like very airy kinds of styles... lots of chiffons and light materials

Thanks for this post. I have been thinking the same thing, I am 31, but people quite often mistake me for being less than 20. The things people wrote in this post are really helpful.

I have the same problem Gina. I am 22 and still get carded for 16y/o stuff (acetone, spray paint) I had one clerk that thought my id was fake.

Wait, you have to be over 16 to buy spray paint, is that why they always card me? I thought everyone got carded buying spray paint... -.-

    You are absolutely GORGEOUS!!!

I agree with the other ladies, definitely talk to your MUA and make sure that she knows you are going for a more sophisticated look. I'd also suggest shying away from the prom-y updos for your hair obviously and that dress you showed is definitely more sophisticated than most so I think you will look beautiful!

Lol, I'm 22 and my husband just turned 27, but I also look a lot younger than I am. I was even offered a children's menu at Old Chicago a year ago (now that's bad), and I'm -frequently- asked what year of highschool I'm in, except when I'm in a suit. I was self-conscious too about looking like a kid playing dress-up, but whatever. I looked great and felt great on my wedding day. Smiley smile

I am 26 and people still think I am in high school. I get it all the time and it's super annoying! I feel your pain!!!

I may get shot down for this, but my tip is to not wear a tiara... nothing screams more 'high school prom queen' than a tiara. (Ugh, my biggest wedding hate along with pickup dresses!!) And so what if you look young?? When you are 60 you are going to love the fact you looked so fresh!

I'm with iguanatan - avoid tiaras, and anything little-girlish (ruffles, pickups, etc). Also, use matte, not shiny makeup.

The problem with looking young -now- is that it can be hard to get people to take you seriously. Plus, everyone always calls me 'cute'. I think my wedding was the one time I was called beautiful. Wearing suits and really nice clothes helps though.

Wow! It's kind of good to know that other people have the same problem. I get carded for everything. I bought a drink while we were out to dinner with friends and was completely mortified when the waitress looked at my ID for like a minute, stared at me suspiciously and when she was finally convinced it was me, went on and on about how I don't look any older than 15 and she never would've guessed. You're right Little K. nobody takes you seriously. It's sad because sometimes it makes you not want to take yourself seriously either. I'm happy that you were able to feel beautiful on your special day! You really are! Thanks Jessica, I really appreciate that! Iguanatan and Shannon- No tiara! I'm more of a flowers in my hair kind of girl anyways!

I am 25 & if I wear my hair a certain way people claim I am under 21. My MOH & I went to Hard Rock Cafe for Lunch the day before my wedding & the waiter- also 25- told me I looked 18. I just laughed and said "Thank you." I hear that a lot. I am carded for beer. It never fails that they say it when I have my pink eyeshadow on and my hair straight. If I do natural tones on my face and wear my hair in an updo of some sort I look older.

I'm 23, almost 24 and if I have my hair up, especially in a pony everyone thinks I'm still in high school. I was talking to a nurse at work about this being my senior year, and he really thought I was a senior in high school, not college!

I'm still wearing a tiara for my wedding, but I want to do something a little more mature for my hair, some sort of half up half down bit. I think the make-up will probably be the key way to look older on your wedding day.
