Hotel room block

I’m planning an intimate destination wedding but the resort that I want to have it at is $400 a night. Is that to much to ask my guests to pay? I’ve considered other hotels but I can’t stop thinking about this particular one! Also, they require a minimum of 10 rooms for my hotel block. How do I tell...

How do I tell my guests they have to stay there without saying it like that? Lol. Am I asking to much? 😩

I absolutely agree with you. Unless I was very comfortable with people paying this much, I would look at other venues.

If I wasn’t able to attend your wedding without paying for a $400 hotel room, I would decline the invite. I don’t care how nice the room is, $400 on top of all the other expenses included with going to a destination wedding is too much. I refuse to even spend $400 a night for our honeymoon.

If I were you and wanted the venue that badly, I would fork over $4000 (10 rooms minimum at $400, right?) to ensure that I would have the venue no matter what. Then, if your guests book a minimum of 10 rooms, great; you will get some money back. If not, you pay more than you wanted but you have the venue you desired. I am having a wedding abroad and actually ruled out a venue exactly for this reason: I didn’t want to spend a lot of money on the actual venue and I knew it wasn’t right to count on my guests to pick up the tab. That venue was willing to have me pay the full amount and then when/if guests decided to book there, they would credit me back. So likely, your venue may have a similar option.
On another note- I am the type of person who would consider $400/night too expensive, regardless of how nice the resort. I would do it though if there was no other option.

$400/night for a destination wedding is pretty standard, but whether or not it is an all-inclusive should be your selling point. The hotel i chose requires that 50% of the guests stay at the resort for at least 3 nights, and I have to pay a day pass for anyone coming from off property. Talk to your guests though, they might surprise you.

I don’t think $400 a night is ridiculous for a nice hotel room, but I wouldn’t pay that much to attend a friend’s wedding. I would pay that much, and probably more, for a resort of my choice for a vacation I was going on. I personally am not a fan of destination weddings because it is so expensive for guests (especially when being a guest to a wedding is expensive already), but to each their own.

I thought DW for that exact reason, it would be like a mini vaca for everyone! Also, how often do your closest friends & family get together out of the country !! ☺️

Thanks for your input. I understand a DW is more expensive, that’s why I’m going to forgo the bridal shower & advise against gifts at the wedding. I’d much prefer for my closest family & friends be all together on vacation for such a special event. ☺️

I’m thinking of paying $1k towards the guests rooms to bring the cost down to $300 a night which I think is much more reasonable. Do you mind me asking how much your guests are paying? Mine isn’t all-inclusive. 😳

Oh wow that's a lot for one night! I would put some feelers out to see if that would be a good idea or not. If nobody else is up for it and you still cant get it out of your head, get it for you and your hubby after the wedding!

Thanks for the advice, but that’s where we differ, because I have no problem spending that much for a 5 star resort. However, I realize everyone’s budget is different so that’s why I’m questioning it.

Thanks for your advice, but unfortunately the hotel requires a minimum room block in order to have the wedding there. So I have a lot to consider !

Actually that’s very similar to what my venue is asking. They don’t require I pay the entire room block up front but I do have to pay 50% to reserve it. Then once all of my guests book, that amount I paid goes towards the F&B minimum. I think I might pay $1k towards their room rates to bring the cost down to $300 per night if the hotel won’t work with me.

    That helps!

I’m not sure if I followed everything here, but is your wedding free if you have a minimum of 10 rooms booked?

We thought about having ours in Miami because we’re in FL, so it was still far enough to feel like a DW, but close enough that the cost for travel would be less expensive. Thanks for your input, but I think I’m going to pay $1k towards the guests rooms to bring the cost down to $300 per night. If we decided to have it in FL a lot of our guests would still be coming from out of state & have to pay for airfare & accommodations, so I think $300 for a 5 star resort in Cabo is reasonable.

Yes, I guess that’s why they require a minimum room block. 🤷🏻‍♀️ To make sure they’re making $ somewhere! Lol

Thanks for your input but I disagree. If we decided not to have a DW, a lot of our guests would still be traveling from out of town & have to pay for flight & hotel. However, I understand how $400 can be steep for some, so I’m considering paying towards the guests rooms to lower the cost per night to $300.

I think I started to answer this and walked away. I believe the cheapest room was like $800+ for the whole 3 nights.
