Hotel Block for Destination wedding

Melanie, on December 31, 2019 at 6:05 PM Posted in Planning 0 11
Hi everyone! We are having a destination wedding in Orlando, FL, at Universal Orlando, at the Royal Pacific resort. We were able to get discounted blocks for two hotels there for our guests. We chose the hotel the wedding is at (which is a luxury hotel) and a value hotel for those with tighter budgets.

However, my fiance decided to tell his family that everyone should just book the value hotel "since its cheaper". His family is very well off while my family is not. I got a text from his cousin saying that all of them are coming and all of them will be booking the value resort. I am worried that people ( friends, my side of the family, heck, even our wedding party) will not be able to book the value resort now that they have all decided to book there.
I am upset with my fiance for creating this situation and possibly making it so others we got the value resort for won't be able to make it.
I haven't given anyone the number to call for reservations yet. Should I give it out to those I know have to book the value hotel first? (Like my parents, and my bridesmaids) Should I let his family know there is limited space and not all of them will be able to book the value hotel? I am not sure what the etiquette should be here. Please help!

A lot of hotels will let you block and if they fill, block a few more. If you want to give people [everybody] a heads up that they may book up fast. But telling the people you think are poor that they can only book a specific hotel is kinda rude. And telling people that since they aren't poor, they need to stay at a pricier place is awkward too.

Nowhere did I say that "people I think are poor" have to book one hotel. What I did say is that I KNOW several people who have spoken with me about hotel prices and what they can afford as we checked with several people before settling on a destination wedding. We booked the value hotel so we had all budgets covered.

Former Orlando resident and Universal Team Member here... Is there a reason they'd have to use your blocks? Doesn't Universal have 2 or 3 budget options now? Or in general Orlando has SO much lodging. I get that staying on site at Universal is helpful since they have transportation on property, but if anyone is willing to drive/rent a car you can get great multi room vacation homes/condos in the area for similar pricing to Universal's hotels (I think, I haven't shopped them in a while). Not saying it would be the same for theme park area, but for my wedding just north of Orlando my family and future inlaws are splitting a 5 bedroom AirBnb for ~200ish/night (total, not each!)

I would give everyone the information for the hotels and they can decide from there where they want to stay. We had guests stay our venue which was a hotel, other hotels and Airbnbs. If the cheaper was gets filled and they can't afford the more expensive one then I am sure they can research it and find somewhere else to stay.

Hi Brittany! No they don't have to use our blocks, it just the most convenient (Royal Pacific and Cabana Bay) My brother was talking about driving down from Michigan, making it a road trip and staying somewhere off property. I'm cool with that, I just want to make sure everyone has options when they go. Air bnb could possibly be cheaper if people want to rent a car and split it all, that could work to. Thanks for your advice.

Hi Veronica! I guess it partly tr he responsibility I've put on myself to make sure guests are taken care of for our wedding, but you are right. I'm sure people can find cheap options through air bombs and whatnot if the value resort books up fast.

I totally get it, but I wouldn't worry too much about it. They can definitely find their own place to stay.

I agree with Brittany. Smiley smile We're frequent visitors of UO and they have really upped their value hotel game! There is now Cabana Bay, Aventura, and Endless Summer which are all very reasonably priced, as well as many other near by hotels with reasonable rates. I've stayed at the Drury Inn near Universal and it was great. Vacation rentals like Brittany mentioned are another great option. So if for some reason your guests can't get in at Cabana Bay, don't stress it too much - there are tons of great options nearby. We stayed at Royal Pacific last January and loved it. So much fun that you're having your wedding there!!

Can you extend the block to be larger?

Hi Ansley! Thank you! We got engaged at UO only birthday last year and loved it there so much, we made it our wedding venue! I know the hotels on property pretty well and assumed there are other choices out there. I am going to give the number to my parents first since my moms heart is set on Cabana Bay. Then our wedding party (which know will leak out others anyway) then it's a free for all for everyone else. Thank you for your advice!

The wedding planner told me once the original block is full, we can try to add more into the system, if they are available. Its during Universals Halloween Horror Nights though, so it may not be a possibility.
