Help!! Wedding song help! Is hallelujah appropriate

magic416, on October 24, 2010 at 3:17 PM Posted in Planning 0 16

I love the song hallelujah (leonard cohen cover) Mine and FH's first date was to see shrek and I absolutely love the song. I realize the lyrics are a little over the top, a little sexual, but does anyone listen to lyrics. Be honest can I use it or is it a bad choice?

We're getting married at our venue out in the gardens. The venue is an old victorian house that he converted his downstairs into a ballroom/reception site. The sog would be for our first dance

Then I really wouldn't worry about those two lines. People will be interested in so much more than every little word, and although it's talking about sex in those two words, it doesn't use any inappropriate words. Any children there wouldn't understand that bit for example.

It's a pretty song, but I think I might be looking at the meaning a little different. I wouldn't think it to be a wedding appropriate song. BUT that is only my opinion... you mihgt have a diff take and memory on the song. If you like it and it makes you feel good (or happy) go for it. :o) it's your day sweetie. (here's a link to the lyrics if you haven't actually read them http://www.azlyrics.com/lyrics/leonardcohen/hallelujah.html)

I think its a good choice Smiley smile If you are worried about it just have the dj/mc announce that this song is special because your first date was to see shrek.

I like Lilssassafras' suggestion - that way people know why you chose it.

Ok, I ABSOLUTELY LOVE the song, particularly the Jeff Buckley version....but Buckley added a line that has generally been left in that just turns me off to it being a wedding song:

    "Maybe there's a God above

But all I've ever learned from love

Was how to shoot somebody who outdrew ya

And it's not a cry that you hear at night

It's not somebody who's seen the light

    It's a cold and it's a broken Hallelujah"

If you go with that, I'd just cut it off before that last verse. Smiley smile
