Help on Vows

Michele, on February 24, 2022 at 10:28 PM Posted in Wedding Ceremony 1 5
Our October wedding got shifted to February 26th due to a bunch of life changes that happened over the past 3 weeks... I had an idea my fiance wanted to do our own vows, but he only confirmed that today. Where do I start? How do they go? I've only been to 2 weddings and one of them used the standard basic vows, nothing super personal, and the other that was personal was 16 years ago so I don't remember hardly anything. Can anybody help about how to get started?

I would start with making a list of the promises you want to make to your fiance ("I promise to care for you in sickness and in health" or "I vow to support you in chasing your dreams" or "I promise to celebrate with you when your favorite baseball team wins"). From there, you can organize them into sentences/paragraphs. You can always add a few sentences about what you love about your partner, how you met, your traditions, etc, though the main focus of your vows should be the promises you're making to each other.

Here is how I structured mine. Keep in mind they only need to be a minute or so long read aloud.

    1) ideas about love prior to meeting/impression when I met him. I mention something about how his dog and the fact he had a beard hooked me in

    2) what makes them a good partner/how they've impacted your life.

    3) promises. I made some jokes in this section like "I promise to listen to you talk endlessly about every new board game and hobby you try." and "to taste every beer you shove in my face even when it doesnt taste like beer."

    4) DONT FORGET TO SAY YOU LOVE THEM

Vows dont have to be really serious or poetic. You can use them as an opportunity to throw in funny inside jokes between the two of you. They are meant to be genuine and from the heart so dont worry too much about how other people will receive them. The only person that matters is you fiance.

Write what is personal. Tell him the things you want him to know and believe. They can be funny, or serious. If your wedding has a theme you can use words to match the theme of your wedding. I’m an author and writing my own vows have been a struggle because of what I’ll be saying in front of our audience. So, consider your audience. Is your wedding about them or your future husband? Say what needs to be said. Let your words reflect how your relationship has made you feel. Your vows don’t have to follow any specific steps or guidelines.
    Hope this helps Smiley smile
