*HELP* How to incorporate sports into our wedding??

Kat, on June 5, 2012 at 11:04 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 31

FH is a HUGE Detroit Red Wings fan (hockey). He has joked about having a hockey themed wedding but that is definitely not something I'm into. I am surprising him with a Red Wings garter and recently suggested that we could somehow name our tables after his favorite players on the team or something of that nature so he could have a part of something he's passionate included. Any ideas on how to do this tastefully? He wants to pick a player to name each table after and have a picture of that player holding the Stanley Cup on the table and maybe their name under the picture...but I'm worried that with hard to pronounce names like Yzerman and Datsyuk, this could be confusing for guests...and how would I do my escort cards with names of players versus table numbers??

I don't want it to end up looking tacky but I want him to have something like this to contribute. It doesn't tie in with anything else we're doing so I just want to do it in a way that's tasteful.

Another idea I had was, instead of the table names, we could get him a Red Wings groom's cake. I haven't even suggested this to him yet so I have no idea what he'll think of it. I could even do it in addition to the tables. The only problem with that is that his sister, who is also a BM, is making our cupcakes for the wedding. I'm already worried it's going to be hard for her to enjoy being a BM with the huge task of doing cupcakes (and hosting the rehearsal dinner) so I don't want to ask her to do another cake on top of that...so I was thinking I could order a groom's cake but I don't know if that would be offensive to her. I think I would talk to her about it first.

I just want him to feel included because even though I have asked for his input on every single detail of the wedding, he's telling me now that he feels like it has no aspect of HIM in it.

I'm not into Hockey and I think I've only been to a couple games in my entire life...but do they do a starting lineup announcement like they do at basketball games? Is there a particular song they use? I wanted to include my basketball stuff into our wedding and for our bridal party introductions we had everyone introduced as if they were the starting lineup to a basketball team. This could be fun Smiley smile

Then you're incorporating the sports theme without having to 'actually' do it in print or figuring out names or how to do escort cards?

I think it would look great, and who cares if they can pronounce it. If the player is wearing their colors or a jersy, I think it make it obvious that its a player from that team...It would be kinda cute...

Maybe you could even have a groom's cake..

What if you did something like this only with all the groomsmen wearing Detroit Red Wings shirts instead of the super hero shits?

Could you use the players jersey number instead of their names for your tables? Your numbers wouldn't go in order, but it could be Table Number 24, Table Number 44, etc. rather than the last name. You could also incorporate the team name... "Detroit Red Wings #24"

Or, can you find some Detroit Red Wings dress socks and have all the groomsmen and your groom wear them and do a picture like my DH did with his groomsmen?

Cydney - we had thought about doing a starting lineup announcement for fun but they don't really do that for hockey games...I don't think! I thnk he wants something included that is obvious to guests that it has HIS stamp on it. We're walking in to the reception to the Star Wars theme so I thought that was his stamp but he wants hockey now too!

Mrs Jaclyn - The players would all be from one team so I don't think the colors would help but maybe you're right that the pronunciation wouldn't matter. I just can't figure out how I'd do the escort cards. I was originally going to keep it simple with something like: John Smith - table 1

Maybe I could just say: John Smith - table Yzerman. I guess that's not too confusing? As long as the guests could see the players names on the tables they could probably figure it out.

This is my inspiration for escort cards. If I have to change it to fit the hockey player theme, I guess I could...but it's so cute!

Cydney - The shirt thing is a great idea...but I think if we did that he'd want to do the superhero shirts! Haha...I can definitely suggest it though. That might be cute! Smiley smile

    I love the sock idea!!

FutureMrsJMiller - I suggested the jersey # thing as well but he wants the player names for some reason. I think because he wants a picture of the player on the table and if he does that, you wouldn't be able to see the # because the #s are on the backs of their jerseys.

Maybe if anything we could do name AND jersey # on the table itself but then just use the jersey # on the escort card??

Here are a couple more for your escort card ideas.

What about hockey pucks as your escort cards? - maybe you could have cupcakes or mini cakes that look like hockey pucks?

Or small hockey stick tips as your escort cards?

    This has so many possibilities.

you could even do a hockey themed bouteniere. check etsy, i bet you can find a seller.

the table number idea is great. But yeah, I could the players names getting confusing. But, what you could do is get a playing card for each guy you want to use and blow it up to 5 X 7 and frame it on the table.

Cydney - OMG you're awesome! I LOVE the idea of doing pucks as escort cards and I really like the last picture too with hockey stick tips...although I have no idea how I'd go about getting those! The cufflinks are cute too - I was actually thinking of getting him cufflinks anyway because he doesn't have any. Did these pictures come from a particular website by any chance??

I like the cupcakes! And since his sister is already making us cupcakes, maybe I could just have her do several of them with a hockey themed topper like in the picture, rather than having them all match our theme. That way it wouldn't be too much extra work for her.

Loving the ideas ladies! Keep 'em coming!

I bet you could make those hockey stick tips instead of trying to find them.

These all came from a Google search. You may want to look around b/c those cuff links on the site I found them on were $220.

    Here's the cake topper: blog.magicmud.com/2012_05_01_archive.html

What if, when you're both introduced, you came in with a hockey jersey on like this couple with the football jersey

I actually found the blog that the picture of the hockey stick tips came from and it has a tutorial on how to make them! Sounds pretty easy, too! I do like the jersey idea for when we are announced, as well! I think he'd love that, actually!

Those shoes are cute too but I bet that could get expensive!

    Okay more stuff! Smiley smile

    THIS IS FUN!!!

Obviously in your wedding attire...but have your bridal party hold hockey sticks above your heads like this as you come in for your introduction at your reception...or you could have the guests sitting on the outside at the ceremony hold them up as your walking back down the aisle?

This is from the pic above, but this is how they had it displayed...so cute!

Make something like this and have it hanging somewhere?
