Heels or Hem?

kristina135, on July 3, 2016 at 2:03 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 24

So, my dress came in (yaaaaayyyy!), and when I went to my first fitting, we decided we'd take it in and give it a 3 point bustle. But, even though I'm 5'8", it's a bit long with the 2.75" heels I've chosen. Now, I can do either of two things: suck it up and get the hem shortened, or get different shoes. I don't mind getting new shoes, my current ones were not expensive. But I'd rather not hem if I don't have to... it's only an inch or so too long, and my dress has a rather complicated skirt, lol. I'll include a pic for reference. But I also don't know how I feel about being 6" tall at my wedding...on one hand, I don't mind being taller than FH nor does he (he's 5'9" and change). On the other, I don't know if it will look weird. What do you guys think? (Btw this pic is the sample, I don't have any of my dress on me. But it's the same, obv.) Eta: clarity.

Dang, that must be one long dress!! I opted for 3.5" platform wedges to avoid a $190 hem. But I'm only 5'4". One inch taller isn't that much. I'd probably just get taller shoes.

The other option is to do the hem, but get lower heels do you are shorter or the same height as FH. How much will it cost for the hem?

My mom just sent me pics she took.... here is my actual dress (lol the sample was about 4 sizes smaller, looks much better on me in my actual size, haha). Yeah, I'm leaning towards just getting different shoes.... my seamstress is a friend of mine who does costumes for a major cruise line as well as bridal alterations, and she's giving me an awesome deal, but it would still cost a lot more for the hem than the shoes.

I didn't want to be towering over FH, but an inch or two isn't s big deal I guess. Edit: @KDS, not sure yet. ... I told her to just do the bodice and bustle for now and see if doing that makes a difference first, and then when I come back we can talk about it.

I think that as long as you're sure that you can wear higher heels and still be comfortable, go for it. You're dress is absolutely stunning by the way!

If you're comfortable in higher shoes, I'd go with the shoes.

I would just hem it. What happens if you decide to take your shoes off at the end of the night. Now you're dragging the entire hem of the dress all along the floor.

Then again, I had my dress hemmed for flats because I plan to switch to them after the ceremony. You still can't see my 3" heels through all the fluff.

I am very biased, because I HATE heels, but I'd say stick with the shoes you have hem it-- better to have happy feet for dancing!

I'm having the same dilemma. I bought sparkly flats that were really inexpensive and I love them, and they are super comfy. However, to hem the dress will cost a lot more than for me to buy shoes that are even slightly taller.

I have decided to hem the dress however, because I want to be comfortable all night, and I'm quite certain that I would fall flat on my face without hemming it even with taller shoes. I will have other adjustments made to the skirt (it is too fluffy for my taste), so they might as well hem it along with it.

You look so beautiful! So, you're going to spend money either way to get new shoes or to get the dress hemmed. It likely will cost more for the hem, but you also need to consider that higher heels could make your feet hurt! You don't want to be uncomfortable during the ceremony or reception.

My dress is hemmed to me being barefoot. I've tried it on with heels and wedges and you can barely see my toes/shoes. I say hem it!

I vote hem, but mostly because I'm self conscious about being taller than FH and I will be with heels. So I'm basically just projecting my insecurities onto you and your FH.

If he is 5'9" and you're 5'8" then you're going to be taller than him regardless of whether you get new shoes or wear the 2.75" ones. I would get new shoes, or at least shop around and see if you find some you like before hemming it.

I'm 4'11" so I will always go with hem.. I also refuse to wear heels on my wedding day because I'm so clumsy. If you're comfortable wearing maybe a higher heel, go for it. If not, I would definitely hem. I know I would trip on the dress even if an inch doesn't seem that long, it's easy to get tripped up

Are you currently tripping on the dress when you walk? If not, then I wouldn't worry about it.

I didn't want to stand in heels for 6+ hours, so I definitely wore flat shoes and got my dress hemmed. Worth it! My feet were tired even without heels.

Well is it better for your budget to get new shoes or hem it? I would probably prioritize that first.

I'd personally go with the hem. Even if I could wear high shoes during the ceremony (which I can't) I'd be taking them off right after dinner and then I'd be walking on the dress. I'm wearing a little kitten heel and that's enough for me.
