Having dinner after eloping, who pays?

Beth, on November 2, 2016 at 1:24 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 44

My fiance and I have decided to elope rather than have a wedding and are planning to go out to dinner afterwards with family and friends. Who pays for dinner? Does everyone pay for their own, are we expected to pay, or one of our parents?

You're expected to pay unless your parents OFFER to help.

Whoever is planning the dinner and inviting people pays. If you guys decided to have a dinner afterward and invite your families and friends, you pay. If your parents came to you and said, "hey after you get married let's all go out to dinner and lets invite so and so, my treat" then they pay.

You pay. It's your thank you to whomever attended the ceremony.

You would pay if you are inviting everyone to go out to dinner.

Think of the dinner as your reception. It might be small and not a full on wedding, but that's what you've opted for. So it's your bill.

This is what we're doing, sort of. After the ceremony, we're just having a fancy dinner with immediate family, and we are paying for everything, like a traditional wedding.

Unless someone says, "We'd love to take everyone to dinner as our present to you" you pay.
