Mrs. Bivens to be
Super April 2017

Have you been practicing signing your (soon-to-be) new last name?

Mrs. Bivens to be, on February 28, 2014 at 10:14 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 30

I know it may sound completely crazy and/or dorky of me, but I have been practice-signing my married name during slow days at work and I didn't realize how unnatural it would feel (I mean, I've only had my maiden name for 23 years, of course). I kept misspelling it for some reason if I signed it quickly and I accidentally signed my maiden name by a couple of times. I'm hoping it gets easier!

I never practiced, but since I got married, I haven't "forgotten" or used my maiden name at all. I was totally okay with taking his name.

I thought it first that it would just come natural to me, but I didn't realize how much thought I would have to put into it to not spell my old name or not to misspell my new name. Lol!

Yes, makes me feel like I am in middle school again, but to be honest I hate making "P" so I need the practice!

Yes! I have a big, fancy signature that has been into my muscle memory for almost 30 years! I was joking around with FH one day about how it's not fair he doesn't have to learn a new signature and he said, "It can't be that bad." So I tried to "practice" and we ended up laughing about it. For one thing, my current last name has a lot of fun loopy letters and FH's last name does not. It's going to take a while for me to get used to it!

Yup, I still have 200+ days to go and I sign my FHs last name all the time - after 11 years it comes pretty natural though

I also refer to FH and my husband on a regular basis.

So much so that one of my co-workers couldn't figure out why FH and I were going away for a "wedding" for two weeks in October...AHHH - because I am getting married.

    Oops

I practice mine at work as well!

His last name is pretty easy though, Perez. Smiley smile

Oooooh I like Perez. Smiley smile FH's is Bivens, which is a big change from Smith, my maiden name.

I started practicing. Mostly so when I start using my new signature, it looks normal, and it matches the handwriting of my current signature. (As in, my current signature is a doctor's-office scrawl, so going from that to carefully worked cursive would look and feel odd)

I practice all the time, too. I love my current signature, and it feels weird to write something else. So I've been working on it. Miss the loops in my old signature, though...

No, ha, because I like my last name better than his.

But my signature looks like chicken scratch anyway (many years of working at a bank and signing a TON of things) that I don't think that anyone can actually see letters except my first letter. My initials are PC and my signature looks like P-scribble-S-scribble. So I may just keep doing what I have lol.

I just signed my soon to be married name for the first time ever after I read this post. It felt really weird! My new name is going to be much more plain than my maiden name. Smiley sad But I still love it.

I don't have to change my signature Smiley laugh Our last names are the same length and made of similar shape letters (e.g., n versus h), so my current signature would work for either name!

I need to practice more. My new signature looks like sh*t. I'm defective when it comes to writing cursive "R's".

I have tried it a few times. I love FH last name and cannot wait to shed my maiden name! Smiley smile It is weird trying to teach yourself to write something else when you are so used to something.
