Has anyone ordered smaller wedding dress?

Jenny, on February 22, 2011 at 7:07 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 24

Hi ladies. I'm getting married in June and still searching for the perfect dress.

I went to David's Bridal today and tried on size 16 dress Smiley sad

I'm 5'4", 155lbs, 38D.

On the other hand, my sister who is 5'4", 125lbs, 34B, tried on size 6 dress and it fits.

So if my sister fits in size 6, I will probably will fit in size 10 if I loose about 30lbs.

I wanted to order size 10 dress, but the sales rep didn't let me. She recommended ordering size 12.

I'm certain that I can loose about 30lbs in 4 months. I'm not going to get any alterations done, so I got full 4 months to be on a diet.

What do you think? Should I go with my plan or listen to the sales rep?

* I would like to avoid alterations as possible to save $$$, since my budget is tight.

You need to order the size you ARE. You can always take a dress in, but you cannot take it out!

I agree with Analy, order a size that fits now and you can always get the dress taken in. Don't worry about the size, no one but you will know the size you ordered.

Agreed! No one will be looking at the size tag but everyone will be looking at 10 lbs of bride stuffed in a 5 lb bag.

I ordered the saize i am and its big already =/ I wanted to order a 12 and i have a YEAR to diet and work out but my mom said no (lame excuse.) now im a bit anxious because what if i get to a 12? my dress has ruching around the bodice and it will be hard to take it in a lot..... It is a sticky situation.

If you are ABSOLUTELY sure you are losing enough weight I would order a 12 or 14 and it wont be hard to take it in 1 or 2 sizes.

I forgot to add, I am altering my dress to be a corset back, so... if I do get to the big day and I am skinny, I just have to lace it tighter =), always a good option!

You're not going to get any alterations? What if you need them? Alterations can take a dress from looking decent on you, to being really flattering. Don't get caught up on the size. I'm willing to bet the larger size has more to do with your boob size than anything else. They need to order a size that will fit the girls comfortably, and the rest can be taken in. Good luck getting fit for the wedding, but don't set yourself up for a let down. 30 lbs seems like a lot off of someone who's only 155.

I definitely wouldn't worry about the number on the dress... knowing it would be a crazy number I tried on all my size 7 & 8's at home before I went shopping. They r sized weird but honestly I wouldn't order too small 4 months seems like a long time but in reality it will fly by. The thing with the sizing is its based on your measurements not ur weight.. I'm the size I am because the girls are huge if I loose weight everywhere but the girls don't I'm still going to have to order the same size and alter everywhere else..

I used to weight about 120lbs. Now that I'm 155lbs, I feel so fat. It was not fun at all shopping for wedding dress. I have an experience of loosing 15lbs in 1 month about a year ago, so I don't think loosing 30 would be a problem. It will be hard but I'm sure I can do it.

Just be aware wedding dresses are sized differently.... and depending on the cut of the dress you could normally wear a size 12... I wouldn't get cought up on the dress size.... if you are unsure or think you should wait than.... IMO you should wait to order the dress.

Jenny please at 5'4" 155#'s is hardly fat... I can understand that you miss weighing in at 120 damn before I had kids I had to eat constantly to stay at 98 lbs... now I look at food and gain weight...don't kill yourself trying to lose the weight it will take its toll somewhere else I'm sure you will look just as beautiful in a size 12 as you would in a 10 and you could always find a seamstress so you don't have to pay the boutiques pricing for alterations.

Just an F.Y.I., DB's sizes usually run small, I am a size 4/6 and I had to get a size 8 from DB cause the other 2 sizes were too small.

You can not make a small dress bigger, no matter what you do. You can easily make a bigger dress smaller. David's Bridal sizes do tend to run small, I bought an 8 and am always a 6. If you know anyone who can do some tailoring, or do a search for local seamstresses, you should be able to get very reasonably priced alterations.

It is always always easier to take a dress in than take a dress out, order the size you are right now and it can be taken in ... I ordered my dress at a sz 22, I'm 5"7, 217 lbs and a 38C, everything is big on me except for the waist line ... I'd much rather be able to slip my dress over my hips and big arse than have to pull it over my head ... and I am aiming to lose at least 40 lbs before the big day, I have 7.5 months to do it in and could easily lose up to 50 if everything goes as I want it to go ... Do you know how great it'll feel to have to get a dress taken in? and FYI alterations on a dress that is to small to take out cost me half the dress price and on a dress that was to big it was 50 bucks that's it.

I think that the cost of alterations needs to be figured into your wedding dress budget. DO NOT order a dress thinking that it's not going to need alterations; it will.

I'd definitely buy it to fit you now, not where you think you are going to be after a miracle diet. The seamstresses are paid to make it fit you and the body you have, close to your wedding day.

If you go through Davids Bridal they will reorder your dress if it is more than 2 sizes to big!! As for alterations- find someplace to do it- Davids is expensive (Example a bustle fix costs 200 at Davids and 25 at a small company) Especially if your dress is strapless DO NOT skimp on alterations.

Honestly, I'm 5'4" and 30lbs in 4 months is a hell of a lot of weight to lose, and not very realistic. If you're a 38D, you're going to need alterations no matter what size you order. I personally think it would be a terrible idea to order a dress THAT small for you. You said you lost 15lbs a month last year...that's EXTREMELY unhealthy and obviously didn't work the way you wanted if you gained it all back. Listen to the sales rep...she knows what she's doing. You don't want to end up a) Looking sallow and sick because you tried so hard to lose too much weight too fast, or b) Not losing the weight and trying to squeeze yourself into a dress that's too small.....not a good look. Don't focus on the size, nobody will see the tag, and wedding dresses typically run smaller than other dresses. Don't risk it, order the size that will fit you.

30lbs in 4 months is an unhealthy amount of weight to loose -- depending on your situation, you may not be able to loose that much in such a short amount of time. Medications, age, stress, hormones, etc can all affect how you loose weight.

Order the size you are now, period. Budget for alterations, if you have to buy a cheaper dress -- get the alterations, and it will look like a million bucks regardless.

The last few months before your wedding are a terrible time to count on losing weight. Even people who are able to lose weight at other times often find that the stress of a wedding causes them to gain, not lose. And believe me, if you are unable to lose the weight, and therefore end up with an expensive dress you can never wear, you are going to be pretty depressed--which is not how you should go into your wedding.

The ONLY reason I ordered a dress one size smaller was because the woman in alterations advised that. All of my measurements matched up to that smaller size except my hips, which were an inch or two off. They knew I was on Weight Watchers and was already losing weight (and have lost more since then, woo hoo!). I trusted their expert advice and went with that size. Don't get hung up on the size. It means nothing. Everyone knows that wedding gown sizes don't equate to real-life sizes. Everyone's body is unique. My gown will be a size 16 but that is nowhere near the size I wear in real life and I'm ok with that. Focus on looking and feeling your best for you and not trying to fit into a certain size.

I agree with Rosie and 2d, 30 pounds in 4 months might be possible, but just not realistic. you are going to have things to stress out about over the wedding you do NOT want fitting or not into your dress to be one of them! Not to minimize your feelings, but I'm sure you look amazing in the dress and your FH will die when he sees you! :-)
