I used to work for a caterer. The best wedding cake I ever tasted (and we always pilfered some leftover cake) was from Costco. I never would have guessed!

It probably depends on what grocery store, but I've heard great things about Sam's Club cakes as well.

Not sure where you are in the country, but I have tasted cake from both costco and sams and while both are delish and cheap, my favorite is costco. Our big box stores like Cub and Rainbow have horrible frosting...lardy. But some of the higher end stores like Byerlys and Kowalsis are good..but will cost more. Ive heard, on here, that if ordering a cake tell them ts just for a party and not a wedding cuz otherwise they charge more, same with a bakery tho too. My venue provides sheet cake, so Im getting a small fancy tasting cake for us to cut and taste. The rest will be boxed up for later, and we will be served the sheet cake with everyone else.

OMG Publix has the best cake. I've had bakery cakes that couldn't compare.

We have an awesome local grocery store in my area that was called Ukrops before it was bought out by a bigger company. The Ukrops bakery still exists and is part of the grocery store though and their cakes are DIVINE. I had some this weekend and had to ask myself again why I didn't just buy my wedding cake from there lol.

We were going to get one from Publix, but FH wasn't really feeling the taste of the cake I wanted. I wanted the raspberry elegance cake but he had to be a party pooper lol. They do a nice tasting selection as well and for free!

I've had cupcakes (which I think were the best ones ever) from Sam's Club. Also I ordered a wedding cake/cupcakes through Tops super Markets. When we were putting together our wedding and trying to move it up we ordered a two tier red velvet cake from there. Wedding didn't happen, but we still had bought the cake, so I had cake for days :o) it was delicious!!

I have to agree with everyone who said Publix. Our wedding cake was from there and it was delicious!

I have also had Sam's Club cakes (not a wedding cake but just a cake in general) and liked them a lot as well.

We had catered cake as part of our buffet package-so cheesecake, tortes and more. BUT I wanted a cake for us to cut into, that didn't have pre slice marks in it. So I ordered a mini cake from a grocery store super near the venue that I had heard good things about (photo is after we cut into it)...and got a awesome tiny birchbark red velvet cake plus a birthday cake for those celebrating that weekend for $26 dollars. The best part is I ordered the cake super last minute (Wed or Thursday before the wedding to be picked up on Friday and they were happy to make it happen)...It was awesome!

Sams has a cake (tiered cake) that serves 66 for like $80....I'm just saying...you can do the sheet cake in the back...a small display cake and nobody will know...

I got a base quote from Publix the other day because their cake is freaking delicious. However, they must know how banging their cake was because the quote wasn't much different than independent bakeries, but they did have a number of options. They are still probably our best bet if our current lead falls through.

Sadly, neither our local Sam's Club or Costco does wedding cakes. I may still try to go in and get prices for multiple one tier cakes because I have heard they can be cheaper.

I'm not sure if I've ever had one at a wedding... but the grocery store CO-OP (not sure if those exist in the states) make amazingly delicious cakes that i would totally be willing to serve at a wedding. I think my favourite thing about them is that they make their icing with real whipped cream and its so light and fluffy (i'm not a lover of super sweet sugar icing or buttercream). YUM!

BJs cake is AMAZING. I am the social committee chairperson at work and I order them for events all the time, plus any bridal shower I'm involved in. They are super delicious! But I've never had a wedding cake from there.

I wouldn't want to trust it. I hate Costco and Sam's Club cakes and would rather go with a baker.

I think that's what my brother served at his wedding. I say 'think' cause there was a lovely cake out, then we were all served cake-- it wasn't till much later that I realized I hadn't actually seen them *cut* the cake, so I assume they had a generic sheet cake in the back, and that's what we were served. It was fine-- nothing to write home about, but really-- it's just one slice of cake.
