Haitian Wedding Traditions in Modern Weddings

Suheiry, on March 7, 2013 at 7:31 PM Posted in Planning 0 3

I'm Puerto Rican and my fiance is Hatian. To honor my culture, we are doing a Lasso Ceremony. Even though it doesn't matter to my fiance, I want to incorporate a Haitian wedding tradition. A lot of the ones we've found, we don't like, such as the whole wedding party walking together to the church (my fiance would rather meet me at the alter), the bride and groom sitting and facing each other during the ceremony (we'd rather stand), and the bridal party dancing down the aisle. We are Protestant so it has to be something that is not specific to Catholic wedding ceremonies. Ideas?

Maybe signing the marriage certificate *during* the ceremony? I though of doing this but didn't realize it was a Haitian tradition. Seems much more meaningful than having the officiant track down the witnesses during the reception. Also, maybe having a second cake to cut at home a few days into your marriage... Anything for extra cake Smiley tongue

Hmm, both ideas are great. I actually thought the marriage certificate had to be signed during the ceremony anyway.
