Group thank you note by email Ok or not?

Laura, on October 13, 2020 at 5:32 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 11
My coworkers surprised me with a lovely wedding gift. I don’t know who or how many of the 15 people contributed, we are all working remotely and I don’t have addresses.

Is it ok if I send a group email?

They didn’t individually sign their names on a card? If you aren’t sure who exactly contributed then I don’t see a problem with the group email thanking everyone as a whole.

Can you send a card? Or is everyone working from home? If the latter is the case, send individual notes. A group email tends to come across as no thought put into it.

No, there were two very nice gift cards nestled in a box with snacks and goodies. One of my coworkers was in charge of leaving it on my doorstep the day of our team meeting so I could open it during our video call

Then I don’t see a problem with a group thank you email. You can still make it not a generic email without individualizing it to each person.

Yes, every one is working remotely. I don’t have anyone’s home email address so I’d have to see whether or not HR would send those to me

You could send the notes individually to work emails instead of a collective CC email.

I think since you don’t know who chipped in for it you could send one group email.
Sending an individual thank-you email to a person that didn’t contribute could come across and rude or make the feel guilty they couldn’t contribute.

If they didn't include a card with names on it, I would think the group email would be just fine. It's so sweet of them to do that, too 🙂

I have no idea what the etiquette says on this, but personally I would be fine with it. If you were doing that for family or friends I would find it off-putting, but as a coworker who went in on a group gift, I'd be fine with a group email to say thank you.
