Groom's Cake

Jennifer, on July 27, 2011 at 10:59 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 21

Hi Ladies....I have heard about Groom's Cakes before but can anybody tell me what they are for? What the tradition is surrounding them. Am I supposed to make it? It looks like a great personal touch to any wedding to have one.

Oh yay!! I love this topic because my Groom had no idea what it was for either because he is from Ohio. First and foremost it is a Southern tradition.

    This is from wedding channel.com

A groom’s cake has its roots in the South, and although it used to be viewed as an added and unnecessary expense, this once-neglected cake has been making a huge comeback. Intended to be a gift from the bride to the groom, the groom's cake is usually dark (often chocolate or liquor-soaked) and designed with a nod toward what's traditionally considered "masculine" (i.e., no rosettes in sight).

The groom's cake can serve many purposes, from dessert at the rehearsal dinner to an alternative choice to the bride's cake at the wedding. It's customary for the groom's cake to be displayed next to the bride's cake and later cut and put into boxes for guests to take home.

    Cont.

And believe it or not, legend has it that single women are supposed to sleep with a slice under their pillow the same night they receive it -- and if they do, they'll dream of their future husband. Boxed slices of groom's cake can also serve as your wedding favors. If you go this route, take advantage of the opportunity to get creative with the packaging -- an additional way to reflect your bridal style.

A current creative trend in groom's cakes is to have the cake reflect the groom's interests and hobbies. Whatever you decide, gifting your new husband with his own cake is something you should do because you want to -- not because you feel obligated.

Thanks so much Rachel. This is awesome. I am already thinking of ways to DIY wedding cake to go favor boxes with this "Legend" of the women sleeping with it under their pillow. Love this idea and it is definitely going to be Liqour Soaked! FH is a drinker! Maybe I will try to make a beer bottle Groom's Cake. I am excited about it now.

My best friend has a husband that is a firefighter, and they did bottles of Fireman's Four beer for their cake. It was super cute! We are doing my FH police Badge with his number on it. Chocolate of course!

It was kinda like this cake.. but not bud..

I'm surprising my FH with a groom's cake at the rehearsal dinner. He works in the hotel and resort industry and was a bellman when he first started out. So... I'm getting him a cake in the shape of a piece of luggage that has the name of the new hotel he plans on opening in the near future.

Groom's cakes are an old tradition and when a bride asks what the purpose is I simply explain that the wedding is 95% about the bride and 5% about the groom in most cases so where the wedding cake is traditionally the elegant cake the bride wants, this is a way for the bride to do something special that is all about HIM! It is most commonly related to a hobby, job or specific interests (fishing, sports teams, etc).

I have done them for both times but most commonly it is presented at the wedding next to the wedding cake or on the head table but occasionally I get a request to have it the night before at the rehearsal dinner.

I have always loved the Grooms Cake Idea. I am designing my FH's grooms cake and it will be a complete surprise to him. He use to brake dance so in the middle of a sheet cake will be a monkey doing a head stand (that is my FH. HE calls me bunny and I call him monkey). With a boom box beside it. Then a bunny girl (me) on the other side of him cheering. In the top right of the cake will be our high school logo(we dated in HS). In the top left corner will be a mock of is bike. In the bottom left corner will be the US Army symbol. In the bottom right corner will be a golf bag with balls and tees falling out. These are all the thing that make up FH. I think he will love it.

I got this cake for my husband. It was a surprise and he loved it. We didn't cut it at the wedding, but did cut it at a family picnic the next day.

My fondest memory of it being a southern tradition is the move, "Steel Magnolias". Who can forget the armadillo red velvet cake?

    Rlg510...Your cake is awesome!

Our grooms cake with serve two purposes. Our wedding cake is carrot cake with whipped cream cheese frosting(favorite of the FH and me). So, the grooms cake is going to be chocolate for the chocolate junkies. I am doing the Coast Guard emblem. My FH is a Vietnam Vet. He was never been welcomed home. This cake will thank him for his service.

I am not doing a Groom's cake. We are having a 4-tier cake with 4 different flavors and the Groom helped choose the flavors.

@Carole B.- for my sister's baby shower I made a "classic pooh" cake that stood up in the shape of a teddy bear (frosted it to look like classic pooh). Guess what flavor it was? Smiley winking

I had a sick sense of humor.. it tasted DELICIOUS! Smiley smile

@Carole - I loved the red velvet armadillo cake! Smiley smile

I think a groom's cake is a great idea. FH loves hockey, and for those of you familiar with the Canadian commentator, Don Cherry, I would love to have a groom's cake made for him incorporating Don. He wears these outrageous jacket & tie combinations, and FH has a koozie which is simply a crazy jacket and tie so it would be a perfect example to provide to the baker.

I had never thought of using it as a favor - what a great idea!

Jennifer E., my niece had a peanut butter pie for her groom -- right next to their wedding cake.
