Gown Retailer Won't Tell Me the Designer

Brooke, on October 26, 2015 at 7:48 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 22

I went to a bridal salon about 8 hours from my home with my family. I found the dress I love, but they remove all of the labels and refused to tell me the designer. The dress is in my budget, so price is not a concern-I am just nervous about purchasing it from this salon (terrible reviews) and not trying it on again (they wouldn't let me take a picture in it and I don't really remember what I look like in it). I can not find it ANYWHERE online. Maybe someone can help?

Designer: unknown

Cut: Mermaid/trumpet-esque

Material: lace applique over lay (lighter color) and the base of the dress was chiffon like in a rose/petal color. The back had buttons that went down the entire train (semi-cathedral/cathedral). I am to the point of paying someone to help me find it because the staff there has been SO rude.

It looks similar to these dresses

If they will not tell you the designer and there are no tags, then it is not a designer dress. It is a knock-off that they have made for their store and they are trying to pass it off as a designer dress. Therefore, you probably will not find that exact same dress anywhere else.

Not necessarily true. They probably don't want you to have the style # and the designer because you can go shop it elsewhere.

Not sure what it's priced at but Mori Lees are for a mid-sized budget. Maybe you could just look for one of the photos? I would be sketched out by a bridal salon like this and the bad reviews top it off.

Common practice, from what I've always heard. It's so one can't waste their time trying on dresses and getting advice from their consultants only to go buy the dress online for less money.

There were a few bridal salons around me that did this, for the reasons that Zoe stated. I refused to shop at them because I think it's BS.

How strict are they about hiding the designer? Do they list what designers they carry on their website?

Is going back possible at all? You could go back and try it on, try to memorize everything about the dress, possibly sneak a photo somehow and then bring it to another bridal salon or WW to figure out what gown it is. (This is really not the best solution, but I know someone who did it)

I agree with Jersey Jen, that's a lousy way to do business. This salon should not only be able to defend the advantage of buying from a brick and mortar shop versus online, but also themselves versus other bridal salons.

Wow I have never heard of a salon that would do that, every place I have been too wanted to brag about what designers they carried! Super sketchy practice, that would make me SO uncomfortable as a customer.

That is a shady business practice. I went to many reputable bridal boutiques and none of them hid the designers of gowns or cut off any tags. That's ridiculous. Unfortunately it's going to be very difficult to find your dress without the designer name or a photo.

The salon I went to first (and got my dress from) warned against anywhere that won't let you take pictures. They are afraid of you shopping around once you find the dress you like, and removing tags is another step. It's sketchy and bad business. My salon said they wanted their customer service to win you over and they know you'll just take a pic in the dressing room anyway, so why would anyone try to stop you. If be afraid of this salon especially if they also have bad reviews. Sorry I can't help you find the same dress, but maybe a reputable bridal salon can?

I would suggest going to a different LARGE shop. Ask them to help.

Never trust a salon like this. When I went shopping, my salon allowed me to take numerous photos of me in all the dresses and send them to my mother while we were at the salon. In fact, the owner of the shop took my photo with my phone and then allowed me to send them to whoever I wanted while my friend and I waited to hear back.

I went to a salon where they didn't allow pictures and that's normal to prevent people from finding it elsewhere for less or having a knock off made. But taking the tags off? So sketchy.

Did they tell you the price? That may help narrow designers down.

The salon I bought at was like this, but has fantastic reviews. I specifically went in looking for a style number that they told me they had at a bridal fair and I saw a girl in the exact dress I bought for her fittings, so I know mine isn't a scam. It was for the exact reason Celia said - they don't want you shopping around.

Shops do this to prevent you from shopping around and some to keep fake (other shops or people looking to open a shop) brides from coming in. Most shops will not allow photos unless you are buying the dress for the same reason and to keep people that have no intention of buying from coming in because they want to play dress up or have a copy of the dress made.

Most shops list designers they carry on their sites so if they did that could help.

I had this happen too- with a dress I didn't wind up going with. But here's how I found it: I spent some time searching for the dress on a crazy chinese website, I think it was dressilyme or dhgate or something. Once I found the picture of the dress, I put it through google image search and viola! It was a Casablanca.

Why would you go to a salon with terrible reviews?
