Got the Ring (Finally!) and Having Guilty Doubts

Puck, on November 24, 2012 at 12:24 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 23

I finally got my ring after about three months of Jared's ordering the ring and then messing up the center stone setting and having to fix it, but I am starting to have guilty doubts. It's from the Neil Lane Bridal collection. I figured if I'm going to have doubts, I should address them before the thirty day period while I can still take it back... But I have no clue whether I want to take it back or not. I do love the design, but I have two problems with it, the first being that I feel like it looks small on my hand, especially with the slim cut of the Marquis diamond. The second is how much it sticks UP. The setting itself rises up before you even inset the diamond, so it looks thin but tall. The height tends to catch on stuff... do you get used to that?

Anyway, I was hoping you ladies had some opinions.... Is some ring doubt normal?

I think it looks large on your hand and with the center stone there's no way to change that. They can only move the diamond down so far... Mine sticks up too. You get used to it. You won't find one that doesn't

Puck, you will get used to the height, it just takes time. As far as it looking small on your hand, do you think a large stone would solve this issue? I really like your ring. Especially the band.

I love my ring! (picture included) Unfortunately, I just got it yesterday and had to have it resized (I lost weight so the 7 is too big)

I had aring once with a high setting, it caught everything! Would knick my babies, myself,...the last straw was when I was changing my scrubs and it caught my inner arm and took a chunk out! I still have a scar lol I traded it in for a flat band with diamonds embedded in it.

I think your ring is beautiful. However, being a marquise cut as well as sitting up high, it will catch on everything (inside gloves, knit fabrics, your hair, etc.). Besides the damage it will do to everything else, it is also susceptible to being knocked out of the setting. You may not even be able to find the stone, if it is.

When buying any jewelry, I always take into consideration if it will snag on things.

I understand the doubts about it snagging, but the doubts about it not looking big enough are kinda....looking at things the wrong way. Most rings will stick up. A different center shape may help the snagging, but they do that so light can go through and underneath the diamond. More sparkle that way. As for the too small thing, I never really thought people actually thought about that. It looks fine to me. Also keep in mind that adding a band will take up space too.

Did you buy it yourself? If not I would feel awful if I were your FH if you thought the ring wasn't big enough. Size isn't really important. The promise is supposed to be. The only reason size is important is because so many women make it a competition to see who has the bigger diamond.

I hasd the same worry about my ring snagging on things but I never really had a problem with it. Its something you have to get used to for sure. I attached a picture of how much my ring sticks up,

I really like your ring! It's almost natural for us girls to always want a bit more sparkle, but I think that anything bigger might overpower your finger since they do look rather slender. I have a marquise cut and it does snag (usually on a couple strands of my hair), but I'm more than happy to put up with it. Personally, I love the look of marquise the best of any stone so I'm willing to deal.

I love your band especially, but I think if it is already snagging on things it might be worth it to trade it in. I don't think it looks too small.

My ring has a fair bit of height to it, but it is princess cut and the way it sits in the setting, it doesn't catch on things. I am a lab technologist and have to wear gloves at work most of the day - and I haven't had any problems, so it may be the cut of your diamond?

My FH wears a ring now that is flat, no rise, no stone, and he still catches it and bangs it on everything, so there is no getting away from it, you just get used to it. YOu can get a bezel setting that will help but you will still catch it on stuff.

"I do love the design, but I have two problems with it, the first being that I feel like it looks small on my hand, especially with the slim cut of the Marquis diamond."

When you refer to the "smallness" do you mean the band itself or the rock itself? If it is the band, just bear in mind that by the time your wedding band is added. it may not look that "small" anymore.

If it is the rock, then...ask yourself why you really need a "bigger" rock. If you search yourself truly and get an answer that you are comfortable with then I would say go ahead and change it but keep in mind that the FH (if the ring was his choice) might not be all giddy about the idea of changing it just because the rock is too "small"

First off, I think your ring is beautiful and looks great on your hand. My ring is "up" too and I've gotten used to it... sometimes i take it off (i.e. during workouts), but for the most part - I'm used to it.

Actually, the ring was *my* choice. I chose between it and a different one with a princess cut. It doesn't have anything to do with the size of the diamond as a "status" thing or whatever, it has to do with the fact that I wear big, flamboyant jewelry and I don't want it to get lost amongst my other swag. FH wouldn't care since I was the one who picked it to begin In fact, I was the one who proposed.

@Pan, Gee O, & Dminted: I think it's kind of negative to assume that someone is complaining about ring size because it wasn't big enough for a status reason instead of the simple idea that they like to see larger jewelry on their hands. You should see my class ring--I got the men's version because I like larger rings. It has to do with the asthetics, not with bragging rights or anything like that. Heck, most of my friends are dudes.

Thanks for the feedback on height everybody.

Its very beautiful ring. Center stone size is fine but looks incredibly included. big or small brilliant or not whats important is that when you look at it you feel something : )

@Alishia, Thanks! I've pretty much decided to keep it. It has definitely grown on me! It doesn't really have any inclusions, I just can't get a good picture of it with my piece of **** Android phone camera. They all come out HORRIBLE. Fuzzy and blurry and weird. I need to get a real camera.

Sorry Puck, I did not assume, I wasn't sure which of the reasons it was that is why if you read clearly, you'ld see I asked on both sides and just gave answers to both options.

Mine sits high as well and you get used to it Smiley smile i think it looks perfect on your hand.. not too big, not too small. But if you want a more bling look, I agree with the two bands

That ring is definitely not too small on your hand. It's a honker. It's huge. Nothing about it is slim.

I never had ring doubt, but I do think some ladies have had it. The meaning behind him picking the ring out for me is so much more important than anything else. It just happens to be perfect for me.

As for it being too small to compare to your costume jewelry you like to wear, I think that no matter what size, it still may get lost unless it's a very modern setting. My sister has a crazy setting that's flat, but takes up her whole knuckle. But most rings aren't like that, and I would just suggest skipping other rings on that hand.

OMG I LOVE your ring!! I have a marquise cut too, and you do get used to the height of it. I also love Samantha Renee's suggestion of getting two bands, that would definitely beef up the overall size.
