Going to salon vs. Having hmu artist come to you.

This honestly depends on several factors: How far away is the salon from your venue or where you are getting ready? How early is your wedding/how early can you go to the salon? How long will your services take to complete? How many people would be needing the salon?

If it's only you, it's nearby your house/venue, and you have a decent amount of time earlier in the day to drive over and have everything done, then you should be fine. But if your wedding is earlier, or the salon is further away, or you'll be needing bridesmaids, etc. to also have their hair/makeup done, then everyone going to a salon could be more of a hassle than HMUAs coming directly to you where it's more convenient.

I'm personally having my HMUAs come directly to us. I have 8-9 people needing services completed, and my HMUAs are 20 minutes in the opposite direction from my venue, so it didn't make any sense for me and my group to go to their salon.

I think having them come to you is much better. You don't want to be driving all over the place, possibly getting stuck in traffic the morning of your wedding. Our hair and MUA came right to my suite at the hotel, and it was very nice and relaxing to just to get up, shower, and then not have to go anywhere.

My mother and I were at a bridal expo and she specifically asked me if we could have a MUA come do our make-up. She was really sweet. She doesn't want to go to a salon, she wants them to come to us and said she'd give up getting her hair done if it meant she could get her make-up done. So, I guess we're doing that. (My mom is probably the age of most of your grandmoms. I can't say no to her!)

I wanted to go to the salon. Ten times easier (its 10
mins from the venue, 5 mins from my hotel). i didn’t want to think about if the hotel had good lighting for makeup, if there was enough plugs for hair, if there was enough room for all 8 of us women, and 3-4 stylists in one small hotel room. the salon is more spacious than a hotel room. Has better lighting, and would photograph better than a hotel for getting ready photos. The salon I chose is really cute, and has a bridal suite.

I personally wouldn't want to go to a salon. I am having my HMUA come to us. Its just less stress and more convenient

Just find on location hair and makeup! I do hair and makeup for weddings and always go to the venue! I think it will make the whole day be a lot easier!

Thanks guys! I am thinking it will be easier for her to come to us as well. But, the salon is only 5 minutes from the hotel that we will be getting ready and we can start much early enough. So I guess it would work out either way but I would love for them to come to me.

Consider what traffic will be like when you'd need to be traveling to and from the salon, and if you can afford to spend that time traveling. Also consider if there is a cost associated with the HMUA traveling to you, or if there is a minimum spend they must meet before they'll come to you. Because I was the only one getting my hair done it didn't make sense for me to pay so much extra to have my stylist come out to do my hair, and the salon was very close so it wasn't any trouble for me to go to them, but it certainly would be convenient to be able to have someone come to you!

For our wedding, we chose to use hair stylists and a MUA from a salon that was an hour away from where we got married, so they came to us. It was very convenient to have them come up to the bridal suite where all the BMs, the two little girls in our wedding, and our moms were hanging out. Everyone was getting their hair done and a few others had chosen to do pro makeup, so they sent enough hair stylists to cover the group and we all just took turns with the stylists and relaxed and chatted if it wasn't our turn. It was very relaxing and worked out very well. It was also helpful to do it this way because of the 9 of us getting our hair done, my mom was the only local person. My MIL and one of my BMs had rental cars, so if we had picked hair stylists that were closer to the venue/hotel, we could have made a carpool work to get to a nearby salon, but it was pretty easy to have the stylists come to us since we were all already in one place.

One wedding I was in arranged to have us all go to the salon as a group. There were multiple hair stylists working on the bride, BMs, FG, and MOB, and the bride had arranged for brunch and drinks to be set up at a little table/waiting area on the same room where the stylists were working so if you were waiting your turn for hair, you could snack or work on your own makeup. It was also relaxing.

The only difference between going to the salon and what I did by having the stylists come to us is that the salon was a five minute drive from that bride's ceremony location. After we finished at the salon, we just had to drive over to the church and start changing into our dresses. Otherwise, I can pretty much say that both scenarios were very relaxing and fun. If you love the stylists at that salon and it's near your venue and is going to be convenient for everyone who is getting their hair done to get there (if it's more than just you), I don't see any reason why going into the salon wouldn't be fine.

The problem that I am running into is I am in a very small.town so there's not many options. I really love this HMUA. Maybe I'll see how much it'll be to have her come to me

I was so glad we had our HMUA come to us. we could spread out at MIL's condo, spend the morning chilling out and relaxing in other parts of the house when we weren't getting done up. i would ask her what she would charge for her to come to you--many HMUAs are used to traveling, i know ours was.
