Glass Clinking

Wendy, on September 22, 2011 at 12:52 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 31

This drives me crazy! Is there any way to discourage it?

Sorry, I don't think there is any way to politely ask your guests not to clink after toasts; the only thing you can do is to raise your glass, but not participate in the clinking.

No, not after toast. They do it throughout the wedding to get couples to kiss. Even if couple is across room from each other.

I like it personally =). Other options are announcing guests will have to do certain things in order to get the bride and groom to kiss. Ie provide a piece of advice, sing a song, answer a piece of trivia about the bride and groom correctly etc. etc.

I don't think you can prevent it for the toast but you can definitely prevent it throughout the wedding. We plan to have our MC announce this after the toast, that anyone who clinking their glasses will have to get up and kiss the person next to them, we're thinking of a different way for them to have us kiss if they want us to, haven't thought of anything yet.

I think there was one bride on here who said she'll have them come up and share a memory with the bride or groom to get them to kiss.

Is this a regional thing? I've been to dozens and dozens of weddings and I have never seen this. People on WW talk about it all the time but I just don't see it.

I usually see it when the bride and groom are eating...that could get annoying though

At my sister wedding instead of clincking the glasses they had to stand up and sing a song with love in it, It was so funny

I dont think there is a way to discourage it either BUT I also dont see it AS much as I use to. Ive been to A LOT of weddings the past few years and it seems to hae diminished some Smiley smile At my cousins wedding, last month, we only heard the clinking 2 times Smiley smile

@Shannon F. that sounds soooo funny.

I like it b/c it means we need to be near each other for most of the night, I get kind of sad at weddings where the bride and groom are on opposite sides of the room all night.

Nicole... I am in Houston and I have seen it at some of the weddings I have been to. I think it just might be a dyeing tradition...

@Shannon - my parents just recently attended a wedding where they did the same thing! The couple had nicely written notes at each table informing the guests that the 'clinking' of glasses were prohibited at the venue (apparently the venue had one too many glasses break and would charge the couple a ridiculous amount of $$ if the glasses broke on them) So in lieu of the clinking the guests wanting the couple to kiss had to go to the couple's table and sing a song with love in it. Apparently very few people participated- until my father went up. He sang the entire song & even added a dance. My mom said everyone there was laughing so hard - it was a hit :o) It turned into some serious entertainment during dinner.

I've seen it and it is annoying. The last wedding I went to, the bride and groom had a poem at the table basically telling the table that if they wanted to see the bride and groom kiss, they had to stand up and share a song.

I hate the clinking because it seems like people do it at the wrong time. Let the couple eat and talk to their tables first! Geez!

I have seen this and I have seen ways to prevent this.. The whole kissing part of it is FUN, but the clinking obviously, is not. Some Ideas instead:

Tell a story about the bride or groom

    Sing a song

    Words of "advice"

Donation to charity (one of my cousins did this! Worked out brilliantly! $1/kiss, went to MS organization)

Plinko board (What I am going to attempt!)

See my pictures! It think this idea is fabulous! And it would be fun and entertaining!

    pic 1: whole board

    pic 2: "plinko" slots...

I'm not sure what to use as a "chip" to drop into the slots? I'm still trying to iron out this idea...
