Giving away the centerpieces?

Clytie, on June 11, 2010 at 1:54 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 31

If you are giving your centerpieces to guests to take home with them, how are you deciding who will get them?

I will have about 50 people, 7 or 8 tables, and am trying to think of a graceful way to handle this.

Just give them to the first 8 people who ask if they can take them. less stress for you trying to figure it out. my family tends to just take them and not ask, which is why im not using the centerpieces the place has and am using my own...i plan on reselling them when the wedding is over, but if one of my family members decides to take one without asking when im not looking, at least i wont owe the venue any money

I've thought about this and I decided that family gets 1st dibs and then wedding party 2nd dibs.

Uhm, at least in my experience, including my wedding, there is no discussion and no deciding. People simply take them! Which was fine by me! We set aside the larger arrangements for our purposes, but guests basically know to help themselves otherwise.

This is fascinating! It would never have occurred to me that anyone would just take one, and I'm still puzzling over whether I think anyone on my list will do that.

A venue I talked to suggested making a game out of it, but I think we'll just have the DJ announce that people can take them and let them at it on a first come, first served basis.

Yep people just take them........at my cousin wedding they used four of their engagement photos that they liked and incorpartaed them with the centerpiece. People just took them, they even went to other table to trade them with picture they liked more. I got a picture but I asked the my cousin first to make sure she didnt have a system for giving them away but most people just took them. So if you plan on a system make sure its known ahead of time.

Oh my! I would be upset if people just took them! We're planning on making cards that say that they are a thank you and advising them that the centerpeice at thier table is thiers to keep, and giving them to the aunts that hosted my shower, and a couple other people who did helpful things- like his aunt who is coming with me to my last dress appt to learn how to bustle it...people who helped essentially.

I agree that people will probably just take them. If you want certain people to have them, you'll need to put each one at a different table and tell them to claim the flowers early!

I had friend that gave them to the aunts, she put a star by their names on their seating cards and announced you could take it if you had a star. At the end of the night there were still a bunch left so I took two (with her permission of course)! I've also seen it done where the person with the closest birthday takes it.

    People just take them???????????? Yikes!

The flowers in my daughters centerpieces can go home with people, but the tall vases and candle holders belong to the florist.

I'm actually doing a drawing for my centerpieces. I am going to place things under chairs and whoever has a winning seat can take them home with them! :-)

At DS's holiday parties, the MC always asks who has the birthday closest to the date of the party, then gives the centerpiece to the person on the left of that person. We'll be doing that at ours. I've never seen anyone just take a centerpiece. LOL. What if the stuff was rented?

Obviously people won't take giant arrangements/vases...only a professional florist is allowed to handle them at my venue. But if you have the smaller, short ones on the table, they'll get picked up. The stars idea is great!

I was just going to suggest FutureMrs. idea... just stick something under the chair, and that makes them the winner!

I've heard of sticking bows under the seats, doing a lottery draw & couples who have been together the longest win.

I'm trying to think of the most unique way of doing it myself. I'll let you know what I come up with Smiley smile

I'm making a game out of it. 1 guest at each table will "win" it.

My centerpieces are foing to be venus fly trap plants & I have a very black thumb, so I am most definetely going to give them away. I have told some of the guest & I will give them to those who have asked for one. I have 10 & about 80-100 guest.

I think I want to decide in advance who they should go to -- like mellissamarie, they're for people who have been especially helpful during the planning. Since we're going to have holiday-themed centerpieces for our December wedding, I may think about incorporating a fancy little To/From gift tag into each one: To Dear Aunt, From Clytie & Groom.

But this is a very interesting discussion.
