Getting Married a year before Ceremony/reception

Morgan, on May 27, 2020 at 11:44 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 7
My fiancé and I were supposed to have our wedding on June 20th, but due to COVID, we decided to postpone until June 19th, 2021. We are getting married in front of our immediate family on June 19th of this year, because we still want to get married on the original weekend.
There are a few things I’ll need to iron out now regarding the ceremony and reception next year.
Should we post that we’ve gotten married or keep it under wraps to avoid confusion next year? Along with that, if we do decide to tell people, would we send out an invite for a vow renewal and reception instead? Will this deter people from coming next year? Should I change my name this year or next year after the reception? I’m sure there are other questions I’m missing, so if you have thoughts please let me know!

1.) Keeping your marriage a secret is no way to start out your married life. It’s also really hurtful to lie to and deceive your friends and family.
2.) If you’re having a ceremony next year, you’re inviting them to a vow renewal. If not, you’re inviting them to a reception.
3.) If it deters them from coming, then I guess you know who your real friends are and you get to save a little money.4.) This is up to your preference and the state you live in. In some states, there is a time limit on changing your name without taking it to court or paying.

My FH and I are doing the same thing! Keeping our original ceremony date of June 19th this year, and we’re only having our parents, no other guests. We’re going to live-stream it via zoom or something for the rest of the family, announce it on social media, and then next year have a big ol party for everyone, and advertise it as a reception only. Congratulations wedding twin!

Hey Morgan i so happy to hear you are keeping your original date.

I wouldn't keep my marriage a secret. I would put out to my guest that we are having a small ceremony regulated by state orders due to Covid-19(it's a pandemic everyone should be ok with or expect this) And that we plan to have a reception/vow renewal next year and can't wait to celebrate with you all.

There's no reason to keep it a secret! I'm sure everyone will understand (and appreciate!) your decision to postpone the reception. Go ahead and share the news and change your name!! ❤️

You can call your postponed reception a vow renewal or a celebration of marriage! I really like the sentiment that the vows are still on, you're just postponing the party. 🎉
