Food truck wedding

A very happy start!, on July 12, 2015 at 9:07 AM Posted in Planning 0 23

Hi ladies,

I'm getting married this coming Spring & am considering food trucks as an option for my food. Looking for any advice/experience from those who have used or are going to use food trucks in the future. We're in the Tampa Bay Area so any specific experience would be appreciated. I'm primarily curious to know how much food to serve. We're getting married around 4:30 and will have approximately 60 guests. Also, our venue hosts food trucks on a regular basis and have already approved the use of them for our wedding.

Thanks for any feedback!

Meghan

Never been to one, but here's an article I just saw yesterday that may interest you

Luckily, it seems like none of those issues apply to her!

My sister is doing it, she wants a more casual dance feel to her reception, where people can get whatever food they want, whenever throughout the night.

I will say if you're going with a food truck for a main meal, getting 2 might not be a bad idea (for variety).... but then again, you only have 60 people....

I'm curious about food trucks myself. My FW wants to have a crepe truck (which does serve meal-worthy crepes) for our lunch-time wedding, but I'm not sure if it's really enough or not.

Is this an outdoor reception? I'm guessing yes? If so, it sounds like a good idea. I would just think it would get annoying having to stand in a line if a bunch of people get hungry at the same time.

I agree with what someone said above, I would suggest 2, for the sake of avoiding lines and having variety.

Btw, love the idea. If my venue would allow it I would so do it!

The venue has indoor and outdoor space and luckily the food truck company we would use cooks the food but then sets it up buffet style if you'd like so that your guests don't have to wait in line, but you still get to have the food truck on site.

That's almost something you have to ask the food truck owners. Each food truck is a little different with how many people they can serve in an hour. If you have a set menu with the food truck they can start cooking ahead of time and the lines can move faster versus having each guest place an order. We're having a pierogi truck for the rehearsal dinner but they're preparing big trays and we'll have chaffing dishes for them inside instead of ordering individually at the window. We're also having a shaved ice truck at the wedding and they said they can serve about 100 people in one hour. Call the trucks you're interested in. I'm sure they can give you that info. I would guess you'd want 2 trucks for 60 people though.

What. A pierogi truck?!?! My FH would freak if they had that here! I'm on a mission now! Thanks!

This sounds like a great idea for a small-ish outdoor wedding! I do recommend talking to the food truck owners about similar events they have done and how they handle crowds. Waiting in line for a food truck at a concert or somewhere crowded is the worst, and would be even less fun at a wedding. If they have ways to expedite or avoid lines that would be perfect.

What I'm doing instead of a food truck (although that was our original idea) is a taco cart. We're having 75 guests, and we found a company that comes with a taco cart (basically a flat top grill on a cart) and they will grill up the meat on site, and they also bring (and set up.tear down) all the fixings for awesome tacos! We're also getting chips and salsa, shrimp ceviche, and considering having them do mini flautas during cocktail hour.

Is there a coordinator at your venue that could suggest some food truck vendors? Are you thinking multiple food trucks? I would imagine that the food truck owners would have a good idea of how much food you would need for the number of guests you're having.

    Yay, another Tampa Bay bride!

First, awesome that you are using food trucks, I love that they've become more popular around here.

Second, I'm sure the food truck vendor and the venue coordinator should have some idea of how much food. The food truck vendor may even offer packages or catering ideas for you.

Third, what food truck are you using just out of curiousity?

I just went to a wedding that had a food truck for their food. It was delicious and seemed like an easy thing to do. HOWEVER. This wedding was probably about 150 people and it took FOREVER to get everyone through. People were still in line when the toasts were getting started. I think with about 60 people though it would be ok and a fun idea!

Oooh, I love food trucks! At a wedding we went to a few years ago, the dinner was catered, but then they had a taco truck come at the end of the reception and it was amazing. Just the best idea ever!

This is perfect for a small wedding. I agree that you should ask the truck owners themselves.

@Zoni -- I'm a huge fan of crepes, and I know all too well just how long it takes them to make those amazing savory ones: FOREVER. While I've never experienced it at a wedding, I would seriously consider the time constraints of serving crepes to order...each one takes a good 5 min or more to make, so there would definitely be a rush at the beginning, unless you had some elaborate plan for spacing people out. I want a crepe now.

I like it better for the after wedding snacks than for the main dinner.

I attended a wedding in Austin this past April. There was 1 food truck that provided 1 appetizer and 3 different tacos, served buffet style. We were dismissed by table to head to the buffet, just like normal receptions. Now, I have no idea what the guest count was, but it was destination, so I'd guess 100 ish.

This sounds awesome. I'd be so excited to go to a wedding with a food truck.

Just be extra careful about whether or not they have extra staff/backup. A food truck was going to cater our wedding, and then the owner completely ignored us 2/3 months until the wedding and we had to fire them and get someone else because the owner just kind of decided that we weren't important anymore and "got caught up in a total home renovation" or "was busy with spring prep" so much so that she couldn't even email us back after several weeks.

I don't understand what is so awesome about a food truck, honestly? It's like going to a wedding and having the same stuff you have at work...

I've been to a wedding where food trucks were the only food option and the line literally took forever; lots of guests ended up abandoning the line and not eating, and the truck also wasn't there very long. Not so fun :/ maybe it would work for your wedding since its under 100 people

We are doing a food truck. We have 150 guests but the food truck will be displaying buffet style. Our venue hosts the food truck and from what I see in the reviews they are pretty darn good! I wanted to have a seated dinner but it's something different!
