I want to start off by saying I am NOT self catering. I'm just curious if anyone has ever gotten food poisoning at a self catered wedding? A lot seem to be obsessed with guests getting food poisoning at a self catered wedding. I googled it, but only weddings that had been professionally catered got food poisoning. I'm personally not self catering because I don't want my friends or family to have to work on my wedding, and the stress of self catering that many people would not be worth it to me.

Listeria causes miscarriage and pregnancy loss.

    Eta: someone referenced listeria earlier.

What do you mean you googled it? Like there's some national food poisoning database? Trust me, if I got food poisoning no one would know besides my toilet.

Well yes actually, beach bride, the CDC keeps track of food borne illness. It's a public health issue.

The only reason I eat at family parties is because my aunts have their food sanitation licenses lol. Otherwise, I'll just drink my grapes k thanks.

@jacks the cases that get reported. I have a feeling that the majority of them go unreported therefore those numbers are basically useless. But that's the problem with statistics about a lot of illnesses.

ETA: good point though jacks, I didn't think of that.

I went to a self-catered wedding Labor Day weekend last year and FH and I decided not to eat it. We didn't trust it and it looked disgusting. It was pulled pork from the groom's parents' farm that they bragged they slaughtered and then cooked themselves. It was in an old tiny barn and they had all these crock pots and unknown salads sitting in bowls. We grabbed McDonalds on the way home. I never heard if anyone got sick.

Well, the ones I see in the office get reported, and the labs report their results to public health. At least here in Canada. It's automatic. I'm sure there are more than what we see, but most major ones need a doctor eventually. The ones that wouldn't get reported are the shorter ones ie s aureus toxin.

I've never been to a self-catered wedding, but I've definitely had friends get food poisoning from food prepared by a friend.

Based on the small sampling of my own friends that have, I think that risk multiplies at a large event like a wedding.

    No thanks.

@Sass I'm the same way. My dad worked for McDonald's on a corporate level and he had to maintain food safety certifications. If I have any food safety related questions, I always call him and if he hesitates, I don't eat it. He's the only person whose food I'll never question.

Also in Canada, restaurants that have been cited or closed temporarily for food safety problems are actually public knowledge. I don't know if it's the same in the US or elsewhere.

I honestly never heard of anyone getting food poisoning at a wedding until I started reading the forums here. That's why I was curious if any of you had gotten food poisoning from a wedding before.

I mentioned the listeria and the pregnancy issues it poses. Because really, who wants that kind of guilt because they were too cheap to hire a caterer to make and serve their potato salad?

And that's why I love coming to WW, because you get a different perspective. Not everyone's experience is the same. I would have never thought about food poisoning at a wedding.

People don't think of the liability issue, and that could ruin someone financially.

ETA: I'm not a lawyer so I'm sure laws differ.

This will make me think twice before eating other people's cooking.
