First Dance Song??

Liz, on April 2, 2014 at 1:12 PM Posted in Planning 0 21

We are having a hard time finding our first dance song. At first it was going to be "At Last" by Ella Fitzgerald. It's a gorgeous song, but I feel like it's been done a lot. So then I thought about the song 'How long will I love you" by Ellie Goulding, but it's short. :-/ I have googled and searched and nothing seems to fit. We want something a little more unique but still romantic and slow.

HELP! Smiley sad

Why does it matter that the song is short? I feel like sometimes the DJ will play a shortened version of the first dance song anyway so the guests aren't staring at the bride and groom for 7 1/2 minutes lol.

There's nothing wrong with short. Your guests honestly don't want to sit through a 6 minute long song. If it's what you love, then use the Ellie Goulding song. Or see if your DJ can add in another chorus to make it a tad longer.

You know what helps? Get a Pandora account if you don't have one and put on the Wedding station. It'll get to know you and your taste and bring forward so many beautiful songs you might have forgotten or not heard in a while! It's helped me shape my list for sure.

We are doing "All About Us" by He is We, but we are doing dance lessons to dance the rumba to it but its such a beautiful song. Ellie Goulding's "How Long Will I Love You" is our backup. Either way I'm having them play "How Long Will I Love You"

At Last is a beautiful and timeless song. I wouldn't care if it was overdone. Smiley smile

Discuss with your FH and decide on something that both holds meaning for you. What bands do you two have in common? Maybe you can find a slow romantic song through some common ground.

Those are good suggestions Smiley smile I do love the Ellie Goulding song, I don't think he was crazy about it, but I will search for other options as well.

You're right about not wanting to have guests stare for 7 minutes, lol. I didn't think about it that way. I was more focused on wanting to enjoy it with FH for as long as possible Smiley tongue But you're all right. I need to keep it concise so as not to bore people, LOL.

    I'm checking out Pandora!!

Offbeat Bride's guide may be helpful. They have a ton of songs that haven't "been done to death", arranged by music style/taste.

I will say, though, that the 2 1/2 minutes of the Ellie Goulding song seems like the perfect length for a First Dance song. People really do get bored during the formal dances, so it is best to keep them relatively short. Also, it seems like she has a lot of songs that would work well as a first dance song-- maybe start your search with her?

    @Liz - I adore that Ellie song!

If you have Spotify, you might search Wedding songlists. I've found a few on there that I've favorited that have some unique songs.

FH and I are dancing to the Ben Folds & WASO's live version of "The Luckiest"

We were going to do "At Last" as well, but we have both found that "Me and You" by Kenny Chesney seems to be more fitting to how we feel about one another...who knows it may change again before October...LOL ;-)

My original first dance song was going to be "Here & Now" by Luther Vandross but I have fell in love with "We are man & wife" by Michelle Featherstone!

One of my bridemaid's has an awesome voice and is going to sing At last for us. She cried when I texted her and asked her to sing at the wedding. It is the first song that we danced to, and she is the one that sang it for us then also.
