Feeling bummed: I have no one to go dress shopping with.

Elizabeth, on August 27, 2011 at 10:14 AM Posted in Planning 1 29

I am not looking forward to going dress shopping. All my family lives in Texas and I live in NC. I don't have any friends here either. My bridesmaid lives in MO so I can't have her come either. The only two people I could go with is FMIL and FSIL. I am not super close with either (even though we've known each other for 10yrs.).

Any other brides not have anyone to go dress shopping with?

Me, and it was fine as much as I was dreading dress shopping to begin with. My family and close friends also live far away. But it turned out better than I thought. I some sense I think it was easier because my opinion was the only one that matters anyway. Well, when it comes to the dress :-)

I think having too many people means too many opinions, and can be confusing. But I also think it's crucial to have a great consultant. The ladies who worked with me were phenomenal, and in 2 hours I was in and out with the dress selected. So yeah, I know it can feel sad, but just try to find a salon with great consultants. And that's a better solution than going with people you aren't close with.

I had no one to go dress shopping with. My bridemaids were all over the country (NC included!). I was bummed at first, but once you get into it, I think you'll find that it's awesome to only have yourself and the bridal consultant. Seriously. I think you will have a greater chance at finding THE dress if you have less opinions flying at you. I know it's nice to have advice from your gals, but I do think that you'll be happier in the end without them. I would skip going with the FMIL and FSIL.

I agree with Colleen G, it might actually be better to go alone. The first time i went with 2 friends and 2 FSILs and I had so many opinions flying at me it was overwhelming. The other day I went alone and it was perfect. I could think clearly about what I want and I actually found the dress (but is didnt buy it yet since i want to wait until i reach my goal weight to be be measured for it).

At the places that allow you take pics take some and send them to your mom and BMs to get their input

I went dress shopping alone- - and I actually loved it. I do wish my sweet mama was there- she's in texas too and im in nyc! But really- I had a great time. No drama- no other peoples issues getting in the way... just help and honest unbiased opinions!

I recently read a post about someone not being able to try dresses on at db because she went alone. I thought it was ridiculous from the sales consultant part to not let her try them on. Even if they aren't close to you I would still go with someone just to get a second opinion, they might see flaws in the dress that you can't. Even if it's a stranger from ww!

If I knew you better I'd offer to go with you b/c I'm in NC too. Smiley smile It won't be so bad going alone. With a good consultant you won't feel as if you are alone anyway, I'm sure.

    Thanks Keisha and Aquilla!

I was only wanting one other person to go with mainly for a second opinion and flaws that I may not see.

My bridal party is also out of state so I completely understand. I did dress shopping alone also but the sales consultants were so helpful and gushing it was fine. Are you anywhere near Raleigh?

Elizabeth, why don't you go try on dresses alone and narrow it down to two or three and then bring along FMIL and FSIL. That way you're not spending too much time with them, they know that you already like any dresses you try on (so no that-looks-terrible-on-you when it's your absolute fave!) and you'll still have that second set of eyes. Plus, they might appreciate being included.

Hmmm that makes it difficult between now and my wedding day. My calendar is a mess! I don't know your wedding date, but if you don't have anyone by Oct 15th I will gladly go with you!

I know it's supposed to be a sentimental time to go with your nearest and dearest, but honestly I wish I had gone alone the first time! I ended up with a dress because everyone was telling me how beautiful it was and when I asked them "well should I get it??" they said yes instead of telling me the right thing which would be "no, you should wait and think about it" lol ok.. it was totally my fault, but see if you have everyone else's opinions, you might lose sight of what you want.. I'd say have peace of mind when you are looking for yourself and maybe your mother can come up for the fitting. I know she'll still cry when she sees her little girl wearing a wedding dress for the first time! Smiley smile

I went by myself this past Monday to try on dresses. I just wanted to get a feel of what I would like without the influence of anyone else.

I went dress shopping on my own. I prefer it that way because I'm indecisive! I've visited about 6-7 bridal boutiques before finding my dress. Going on my own gave me time to process and decide what I wanted for myself. I brought my mom and my friends on my last appointment for my final selection and it worked out well.

Lala & Elizabeth, wait for me!!!! LOL! But seriously, it is really good to see you get this kind of support. While you might not have YOUR people around, the ladies on WW (virtually and in real time) are here for you.
