Father acting really odd as the wedding gets closer?

Kati, on March 15, 2015 at 1:52 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 9

Hey Ladies!

My wedding is around 8 weeks out (yay!) and I have noticed that my father has been acting really strange lately! He won't help pick a father/daughter dance song (even though he was interested a few weeks ago), he pitched a fit about what he was going to wear to the wedding, and he just seems to overreact about every little wedding problem.

Now, my dad has said that he wants to be involved in planning. Lately, whenever I try to, it leads to more anxiety and anger than happiness. I think it could be that I am the only girl in my whole family (extended included), and maybe its becoming a reality?

Has this happened to anyone else? What did you do?

Thanks!

I am not that close yet but In my experience so far and my experience of my sisters wedding, I think parents do tend to get a little weird about the wedding. My dad and FMIL have both been a little strange and the same thing happened to my sister. It goes away.

I think he's just reacting to the fact that his daughter is getting married. just do all you can to enjoy the time and let him feel the way he feels. not much you can do about it. just remember that he loves you, and he's going through a lot too.

I was going to say basically all of that ^^ your dads probably just a little freaked that his baby girl is getting married.

How does your father act when he is scared or stressed? If it's similar to the way he's acting now, he's having an emotional reaction to your marriage. He may not understand it himself. My father, a man who rarely shows any sentimentality at all, had a very hard time on my wedding day.

Thanks ladies! I guess I don't understand it very much because we spend all the time with my side of the family. I had a feeling this was going on, but I needed to hear from people who have been there! We have been engaged for 2 1/2 years already, but maybe now that it is finally happening, it makes sense!

Yeah, daddies get stressed. Send him texts of YouTube songs to listen to.

He's "losing" his little girl. It's kind of emotional and stressful. Remind him how much you love him and need his help. Smiley smile

Honestly, my mom has been a little weird. I've been thinking to myself that I must be imagining things, but this makes me think I'm not as crazy as I thought. She's just been slightly distant and disinterested in anything wedding related.

She's also not contributing monetarily, which I am completely okay with and never thought a thing of it. But I do wonder if she harbors guilt for that?

Thank you for this post. I am an only child. I'm nervous about how it will be for my parents. If they cry, it will be hard for me.
