Experience Dying a Wedding Dress?

Dyeable or no?Experience Dying a Wedding Dress? 1

Hi everyone!

I just got engaged on Valentine's Day to my boyfriend of six years! We are planning our wedding in only eight months and getting everything together has been so crazy.

So in my future mother in law's culture it is really important to her that I have a black gown for the wedding day (it's something about luck or longevitiy of the marriage I'm not sure but I want to make her and my fiance happy). I already picked out my wedding dress which is actually white. I was thinking a compromise would be to wear a black gown for the reception. I haven't found any black gowns I like that are within my budget because most of my dress budget was spent on my ceremony dress. I decided to look online at David's Bridal's sale and found a dress that is so my style and within my budget. The problem is, it's not black.

I will have very little budget (about $250) if I buy the dress on sale but I thought that would go for alterations. I was hoping to dye the dress at home with Rit or something similar. The site says the dress is polyester and tulle. Anyone have any tips or am I going to ruin a perfectly beautiful dress attempting this?

Check out cocomelody.com reasonable prices and you could customize your dress and make it the color you like.

Polyester is very hard to dye. Its ment to be stain resistant I tried to dye a polyester blanket once and the color just rolled off.

I don’t think it would be a good idea to try to dye it yourself. If it didn’t work then you wouldn’t have a dress even after spending all that money on it. I would just look for a black dress, you could probably find a black prom dress.

Have you looked at just bridesmaids dresses? Definitely check out the websites already mentioned, but check out a few local bridal
    spots and their bridesmaids selection.

Look into prom dresses especially at the end of prom season after they go on sale

I wouldn’t do this unless she was paying. If she’s basically making demands about what I wear, she can pay.

Non natural fibres do not dye well DIY. Especially in something like a wedding dress where there are often several different fabrics plus embellishments... I suspect this would be a mess.

People suggested I dye my dress too but it would not be a good idea.

I'm going to keep looking. I keep finding the silhouette I like with the neckline I like but they keep being like satin or other heavy fabrics. I'll be back on the hunt for a dress. Thanks for your response! Smiley heart

That's such a good idea. It's been awhile since I did prom shopping. Do you know when the sales tend to happen? Thanks so much for your response Smiley heart

I want to do it. She isn't making any demands. She mentioned it when we talked about me introducing more of her culture in our wedding. It was important that both cultures are represented. I want her to be happy with the wedding too.

I will be continuing my search. Thanks for your response Smiley heart

She's from Spain. She's old school because I think a lot of modern Spanish brides wear white. She has a black mantilla she bought for me so I really want to do this for her and my fiance.

I've dyed a lot of my own clothes in the past but I normally do stuff that's like 100% cotton and it's normally like $20 not hundreds of dollars.

Thanks for your response Smiley heart
