Hi everyone!

I just got engaged on Valentine's Day to my boyfriend of six years! We are planning our wedding in only eight months and getting everything together has been so crazy.

So in my future mother in law's culture it is really important to her that I have a black gown for the wedding day (it's something about luck or longevitiy of the marriage I'm not sure but I want to make her and my fiance happy). I already picked out my wedding dress which is actually white. I was thinking a compromise would be to wear a black gown for the reception. I haven't found any black gowns I like that are within my budget because most of my dress budget was spent on my ceremony dress. I decided to look online at David's Bridal's sale and found a dress that is so my style and within my budget. The problem is, it's not black.

I will have very little budget (about $250) if I buy the dress on sale but I thought that would go for alterations. I was hoping to dye the dress at home with Rit or something similar. The site says the dress is polyester and tulle. Anyone have any tips or am I going to ruin a perfectly beautiful dress attempting this?

I’ve never seen a Spanish bride in a black dress... both me and my now H have lived there. Usually old widowed women wear black there.
i wouldn’t do a black wedding gown... maybe just a black dress for the reception to acknowledge his culture... remember this is YOUR day, not hers.

Okay. I don't think my fiance's mom is lying about it and she grew up and lived there her entire life up until the last ten years. I want to do this for her. I want her to be happy.

I disagree. I don't think it's my day at all. My birthday is "my" day. Our wedding day will be a day when we choose to join each other's families. I want her to see I respect and appreciate her. I can understand that you wouldn't want to do a black wedding gown but that's okay because it's your choice.

    Thanks for your responses though.

OMG! It's not just me?! My MIL told me about the Spanish brides wearing black thing too!

I chose to honor her wish too as a reception dress. She actually brought me a beautiful black gown but she bought it based on some older measurement (she makes clothes for us for Christmas because she's amazing) and my giant butt wouldn't let the butt area zip and we had no time for alterations.

I didn't buy it but I agree with PP, try evening gowns and prom gowns. Good luck!!
