Expensive Wedding Cakes!

Victoria, on June 14, 2021 at 11:13 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 1 16

One of my bridesmaids is a baker for a really nice bakery. So at this point it has been assumed that I will purchase my cake through this bakery, but everything feels SO expensive. I know that wedding cakes are worth the money because of the time and material that is put into them, but personally I would rather throw that $600-$800 into something else. I've found a great company that makes wedding bundt cakes and I've fallen in love with how unique it is. This route will also save us $400-$500. Am I the only one who feels this way about cake? How should I tell my bridesmaid?

You are not obligated in any way to order a cake through your bridesmaids bakery! If she asks (or if you want to let her know about your decision), you could just say that you decided to book a different bakery that fits better in your budget, and that you appreciated the recommendation for her bakery. You don't owe any kind of lengthy explanation.

I refused to pay but so much for our wedding cake. A lot of guests don't eat wedding cake and it was not something that was super important to us. We ended up finding an amazing baker who made a small (served 40) wedding cake for $250. We then purchased multiple desserts from the baker and did a dessert bar. It was much cheaper to go this route, and most guests enjoy the dessert variety.

You do not have to get your cake from your bridesmaids work. Simply explain to her that their cakes are outside of your budget.

Dude wedding cakes gave me sticker shock! i had no idea it was gonna be $3-4 a slice on average at my local bakeries. i absolutely was not willing to spend $600 or whatever on a friggin cake! eventually i found 2 bakeries that could bring it down to $1 a slice for me.

You are not obligated to order from her bakery. Be honest with her and tell her that you just don't have room in the budget for it. Also remind her that you are not looking for a hand out but that you would just prefer to go a cheaper route.

I agree with Lisa! While it's nice to support her and her bakery, if it doesn't fit your budget, then don't feel bad about using a different bakery!

A wedding I went to a had a pretty cutting cake, then the staff served pieces of a sheet cake that had not been on display. It was one of those from Costco with filling and I had seconds it was so good.

We had some friends of ours pull a clever move on buying a faux cake on Etsy and using 2 sheet cakes from Costco. Not a single person knew until after the wedding and everyone raved about how delicious the cake was, thinking it was a $800 cake that turned out to be a total of $200 for them!

I am not a fan of wedding cake personally and FH has never even had any. We opted to do Nothing Bundt Cakes because we are obsessed with their variety in flavors and the overall display of them. We are doing one tiered caked and 200 bundtinis for the guests with 5 different flavors for under $500 and I cannot wait! Do what suites you best!

Those little bundt cakes are super cute! If your bridesmaid brings it up, tell her you that you found another company who makes bundt cakes and that's what you would like to go with. If she seems upset, or says that her bakery can do the same, I'd let her know that if her bakery can make them at a competitive price, then you would consider choosing them instead. If they don't offer a competitive price, then you are more than justified in going with the first bakery.

I ❤️ Nothing Bundt Cakes! They’re always moist and delicious. So I also considered it for our wedding because the cake is pretty low on my wedding priority list. Mingling, music, aesthetics and creating a nice and memorable experience are what I care most about

Those Bundt cakes are amazing!! Don’t feel obligated to buy from your friend. It’s a lot of money to spend and you should have what you want.

I had never heard of Nothing Bundt Cakes before reading this thread. After the positive reviews, I looked them up. Turns out, there was one right across the street from the pharmacy I was going to today. So of course I had to stop in and get a mini Bundt cake, or two. Got myself a Lemon and Pecan Praline. The Lemon is wonderful! (haven't tried the other yet) Moist and delicious.

OP, you won't be sorry choosing them for your wedding. They're as good as everyone says!

Just be honest. I can’t blame you for not wanting to spend that much on a cake. I know for some it’s a huge part and something beautiful to have in the pictures which I totally respect. For me, I think I just can’t wrap my mind around spending so much on a cake. I’m sure your bridesmaid will understand if you just be honest about your thinking and what you want.
