Evening Wedding in late August - too hot?

pennyl87, on July 13, 2016 at 12:43 PM Posted in Planning 0 39

Hello! I found the perfect place to hold my wedding..it's at a farm in Maryland about 20 miles outside of DC. The barn of course doesn't have AC but it's so beautiful and everything else about it is perfect. I was thinking if we started the ceremony at 6:45 pm, then have cocktail hour in the area of the farm that DOES have air condition...then dinner/reception would start around 8:15.. and the sun would have set around 7:45 in mid-late August.

They provide large industrial fans (and misting tents for the ceremony that's outside) and the barn has wide open doors. What do you all think, is that too risky for the guests? I don't want everyone to be sweating through their clothes!

PS any recommendations for barns with AC in MD or northern VA would be greatly appreciated!

I've seen other people suggest some really great ideas such as go out there yourself in wedding-attire at the time your wedding would be held. If you feel uncomfortable, your guests will most likely be uncomfortable.

What is the normal temperature? If it's over 25*C (80*F) and/or humid, you need to keep looking at other venues.

I'd google the weather in Maryland in late august. I was just in Maryland last week and all I did was sweat even in the evening and there's not much difference in temp between July and August. I think this sounds better for an October wedding.

    ETA: clarity

Only the cocktail hour is air conditioned? Is there an air conditioned area guests can go if they feel too hot? I personally would be very uncomfortable, as I overheat fairly easily.

August is the hottest and most miserable month in Georgia. I would find a venue with A/C.

Average low temps for nights in August in MD show around 70 degrees....but obviously it depends on the high that day...

Hmmm....i need a few more details. so the ceremony is outside and the venue provides large industrial fans and misting tents for that. The cocktail would have air conditioning. the dinner/reception is in the barn right? does the barn have the industrial fans? I think the picking a late evening wedding definitely helps out so I like the times you picked. Since there are fans for the ceremony and if you keep it short and sweet I don't see a problem here. my only issue is if you reception has no air (by no air i mean no fans, no central air, no nothing). I am getting married in August in Baltimore next month. Ceremony is outside but will be 20 minutes top. everyone will have access to plenty of water, fans, and shades. The cocktail hour is outside but our reception tent will open as soon as the cocktail hour starts to give people the option to be in a shaded area where they can sit down and be in the air. Its doable but you have to mindful of keeping things short, providing lots of water, and shade. Goodluck DMV bride!

@beautyofdreams - Yes the cocktail hour has AC, and the reception would be in the barn that has the industrial fans with open doors...and the reception would start after 8 pm. We'd also have about a 20 minute ceremony under a shaded tree. Barn weddings are tough because most that I've found don't have AC. So does your reception in the tent have air?

As someone who just suffered through an outdoor wedding in Florida in June, I vote to keep looking. I can only assume it will be at least in the 80's, maybe even higher. Everyone at this wedding I attended was miserable, and people wound up leaving early because they just couldn't take it anymore. There's was also in a barn, and there was NO airflow.

Late August can be miserable in Maryland. I also vote to keep looking.

I have no idea about the weather in MD but I have to say I HATE industrial fans. They are loud, they blow everything around, and if someone is wearing a flowy dress knee length or above, I hope they are wearing full coverage underwear because the other guests will be getting a show.

@pennyl87 not central air. the tent is open and has fans all the way around the top perimeter of the tent so the air blows down as if there were air vents up top. I talked to the venue multiple times and other brides that have had weddings there and they have never had a problem with heat because the fans are all the way around and keep the air flowing throughout the tent. As another option you can rent AC units for tents. I looked into it but the venue didn't feel it was necessary from seeing all the other weddings but if you can't find a barn with AC and you don't want to the fans for reasons @MrsToBe pointed out which are also valid you could rent a unit.

I don't think it is a good idea.

HOT HUMID nights occur and some times you can get 20+ humidity and it won't be comfortable.

Hot. I think we may have looked at the same venue (We looked at a barn with no AC, and it was a deal breaker for us.) Consider too, that the fans may just blow hot air around. I would keep looking; there are plenty of barns in MD with AC

Maryland girl here!! As you know, Maryland weather is very unpredictable. You could end up with weather that's so humid and muggy you feel like you're in a swamp, or it could be fine. I think a short outdoor ceremony will be fine, but to have only an hour in the AC? Miserable. Are you from here? It's still going to be very hot at 8pm. Your guests (and you) will definitely be sweating like crazy, especially when you add in dancing. Also, your cake will likely melt.

Even at night the summer is still hot, esp when you have crowds of people, hot food and dancing. I'd keep looking or push your date back late Sept would probably be perfect.

@annakay511 yep I'm from MD and live in DC.

@Sandyfish any suggestions on barns with AC in MD? (or anyone for that matter! Smiley smile The only one I've found is Serra Valley which has terrible reviews, although I'm still going to check it out. Ostertag in Frederick says they're "climate controlled" but when I spoke to them the barn/reception area actually doesn't have AC so it's a bit misleading.
