Evening Wedding in late August - too hot?

Hello! I found the perfect place to hold my wedding..it's at a farm in Maryland about 20 miles outside of DC. The barn of course doesn't have AC but it's so beautiful and everything else about it is perfect. I was thinking if we started the ceremony at 6:45 pm, then have cocktail hour in the area of the farm that DOES have air condition...then dinner/reception would start around 8:15.. and the sun would have set around 7:45 in mid-late August.

They provide large industrial fans (and misting tents for the ceremony that's outside) and the barn has wide open doors. What do you all think, is that too risky for the guests? I don't want everyone to be sweating through their clothes!

PS any recommendations for barns with AC in MD or northern VA would be greatly appreciated!

Humidity in the DMV area is awful in August. I vote that you keep looking. If you're that set on it, wait another month and go out at 6:45 on any given night and decide if you or your guests could handle it. I think you'll find that it's entirely too hot and/or muggy to have a wedding in August in MD.

We are doing this but Colorado is pretty dry and it should be a comfortable temp. (Fingers crossed)

We have backup plans if it's too hot/cold or wet.

I think the major thing here is to have a backup indoor spot to take it to if the weather isn't perfect!

Marylander born and raised here. I haven't lived there in a few years, but I do remember the heat not dying down until mid-late September. Chances are that even if you wait until after 8pm, it will still be scorching in the barn. I would either find another venue or push your wedding back to October.

Number one -- the venue, whose primary goal is to get you to sign a contract and leave a deposit, is going to tell you that late August weddings without a/c are great with fans (and they'll also tell July brides that their mid-July weddings without a/c will be amazing without air-conditioning).

I can't even get to the dancing part of the celebration because I can't get past the sweating when I'm sitting in a chair and watching a ceremony. I just looked at the temperatures in the DC area for the last two weeks of August -- you can count on day temps to be in the mid to high 80s to low to mid 90's. If you're lucky, when the sky is black, the temps might drop to the low 70's. If you want to wait for the sun to disappear over the horizon while your guests are gathering around fans and dabbing their foreheads with monogrammed cocktail napkins, that's up to you.

Whenever there is chance of the weather being too hot, please, please, please...go with climate control.

It's up to you how to proceed, but waiting for the clock to strike ten after being at an outdoor wedding since 6:45 is no fun. By then, the damage is done.

I think if you're questioning it, you probably already know the answer. Weather can be unpredictable, and I would hate to see that ruin your day. You also have to think about what the heat and fans will do to your flowers. It's up to you, but it seems like it's not worth the risk.

@penny I went to a wedding in June at the Stone Manor Country Club near Frederick. I believe they had the option to have AC but chose not to. Not sure if you're looking at the Frederick area but I've been to several weddings there this summer - FH and I went to college in MD.

Thanks @CMC, I've checked with Stone Manor and they're booked every Saturday April-November. I'm open to Frederick though!

@penny aww damn, that place so beautiful! Makes sense that it's all booked already. The other one we went to was at the Lake Linganore events tent and barn, it was hot AF and the day before Memorial Day so I would not recommend for late August lol. I know some beautiful locations between Frederick and Gettysburg but I think you mentioned being closer to northern VA

I'm from MD and its not many places i want to be for long periods of time in august that don't have AC. Especially not dressed u. People will be drinking as well and heat and drinks don't mix. Also it will probaly still be light out until after 8pm which means it will still be relatively hot.

Look into Bluemont vineyard in northern va. Their wedding venue is a repurposed horse stable and is air conditioned.

I'm with others on this to keep looking. I had previously recommended on another post to go get dressed up and then try it out and see if you are comfy. It is going to be humid and gross even in the evening.

In Ohio we are already in the 90s most days and with the humidity its unbearable even at night. august is the warmest month, I agree to start looking for a venue with AC!

When I get too hot I start feeling sick and would more than likely leave early.

This would make me miserable. The east coast is extremely humid and august is usually the worst month. Even once the sun sets, if it's humid out, it's going to be disgusting and those big fans won't do much except blow hot sticky air around. I would strongly advise against this.

I'm doing an outside wedding in the evening in Indiana but the reception is inside. It's to hot that time of year to have both outside. I'd look for another venue that has AC.

I hope not. Our wedding is in mid-July, and our ceremony is outdoors. Lots of people on this board have told me that we're rude already. LOL

@penny187 I did a farm wedding in Maryland this past June at a venue that didn't have air, and it was definitely hot! It was tolerable in early June, but I can't imagine it in August.

Thanks for all the comments everyone...@FFW unfortunately my fiancé is a teacher so it needs to be during the summer when there's no school, between late June and August. Makes things a bit difficult but I'll figure it out Smiley smile
