Hey girls (and guys)

FH and I got estimates for our flowers. We got a list of stuff we asked for and then a price. FH and I would like to know where our money goes. We asked the florist for an itemized estimate. The florist said they don't itemize their estimates. FH is not ok with that. I am not ok with that.

Have you ladies ever heard that floral estimates are not itemized? Is this common?

Chime in!

Cate received two estimates both itemized. It also states what kinds of flowers will be in each, but not the cost per stem. This is what it says about her bouquet from the florist she is going with:

Bridal Bouquet – Ivory – Hand tied – Pink Hydrangea, Vendela Roses, Sweet Eskimo Roses, Pink Wax flower Mini Variegated Pitt throughout and collaring, White Sweet Heart Roses in place of the Stephanotis, Bride is providing pin and ribbon for stem wrap.

    $175.00

It continues with the descriptions of her FH boutie, the BM bouquets and GM Bouties, etc. When it comes to corsages it even says mine should be bigger than her stepmothers. LMAO Heck, it even says it will charge $125 to go to her venue to decorate her cake with flowers.

The second estimate was on a spreadsheet and also contained what would be in each piece.

I always itemize, for the reason someone above stated - so that the couple can figure out if they need to delete the flowergirl halo, or the ceremony marker arrangements, or size down or use non-premium flowers in the bouquet - it gives them choices to make things fit in their budget.

Now - I won't write down on the estimate exactly what flowers I will be using or how many stems - because there are many florists out there that are happy to take an itemized estimate from another florist and copy the design ideas, and "beat the price" (highly unethical, by the way, for a florist to copy and "steal" another florist's intellectual property - ideas). In fact, if a potential client comes to me and wants to show me another florist's estimate, I refuse to look at it. I want to hear from the potential client what they want, and I will not plagiarize.

I have heard that a local competitor/colleague of mine is no longer giving itemized quotes, just a total. That's not my way.

Yeah I think it's weird to not have it itemized. Mine is and I know that if I cut certain things out, I'll save money. If it wasn't, I'd just be going at it blind.

I'd like to add - that when the couple chooses me, and I write a contract - THEN I will put more descriptions in as to what type of flowers. But only once we've gotten past the "shopping" stage, and they are ready to send me a retainer to save the date.
