"Envelope Bridal Shower"

ottawa2014, on September 25, 2013 at 3:19 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 24

Has anyone ever heard of an "envelope bridal shower?" My friend's mom just received an invitation to one, and not even the all-mighty google can help us figure it out! Our best guesses are that it is either a shower where you write your address on an envelope for your future thank you card, or a shower where you are requested to bring an envelope stuffed with cash.

Any thoughts?

I've never heard of it, but I would think envelopes stuffed with cash. I'll be interested to see what it is!

If she didn't register, then I say it's a cash request. If she did, then maybe it's one of those .... really, I have no clue....

There is a bridal shower game called "pass the envelope". I remember being at one of my family members showers as a kid and that was one of the games, but for the life of me I cannot remember much about it. I think there was a story that went with it and the guests have to pass something around according to the story? Sorry. i guess this isn't too much help...

This sounds like a fabulous idea! I would give the bride $2 bills because they are suppose to be good luck!

To me that sounds like they don't want anyone showing up with gifts, just cards and money/gift cards in envelopes. But I have no idea... never actually heard of that!

I'm guessing they want a gift that fits in an envelope. :-/

Thanks ladies, interesting to see that it's not actually a 'thing.' Michelle, your penny idea made me laugh! But then I remembered that Canada started phasing out the penny a few months ago and so it probably would be quite hard to do...

    I'll update if there's a different explaination!

Ill send you some pennies. I have tons! Lol. Call me crazy I'd bring a gift lol.... Te weddings for cards... The shower to me is supposed to be more personal. Of course I never buy off registry either. I theme for registry items but go out of my way to find things unique to the couple.

Sounds like money. Not crazy about the idea, frankly.

My mom said that "Greenback showers" were popular where she grew up. Sounds like the same thing...they were probably just trying to make it sound classier.

I'd ask just to make sure but I'm with everyone else....sounds like they want cash/gift card only instead of gifts.

Sounds like a "greenback" shower, where the couple wants money. I think that is rather tacky and ungrateful, as people should be happy with whatever they receive! In my opinion, if a couple really wants mostly money then they should have their mothers tactfully spread the word to family members, but they should still register for gifts so people can do that too.

My only thought is that maybe the bride has to travel with the gifts afterwards, so they're asking for small things (aka cash and gift cards) that fit in an envelope and are easier to transport.

A cheeky way to say "Cash-only" if I had to guess.

Really, I'm sure they want cash, but I find it so tacky I'd probably give them just a card instead. Smiley sexy

That's boring.. the best part about a shower is the gifts! Who wants to watch someone open up cards?

Update: They are registered at BBB. So weird. And Roma, I agree- the gifts are the fun part!

I presume you meant Rona, not Roma.

I would buy them a shovel, or maybe a bag or compost Smiley winking
