Engagement Photos, Worth it or over rated?

Amanda, on September 17, 2020 at 5:16 PM Posted in Planning 0 30

My fiancé and I have started looking for our wedding photographer and a lot of them offer deals on engagement photos if you schedule with them. I'm very on the fence about engagement photos, I'm a little cynical and I view them as yet another expense out of our budget that i could use on cool stuff for the big day. But recently my fiance is leaning towards wanting to get them done. (Also My fiancé is a graphic designer and is making out announcements and we aren't going to be using any photos of us for them so i see this as even less of a reason to get them done)

I'm very curious to hear if people think they are worth it? If you didn't get them done do you regret it or do you think it was a good call?

110% worth it. This is an invaluable opportunity to get to know your photographer and make sure you’re happy with their work. It also helped us get more comfortable in front of the camera.

We had engagement photos taken and I highly recommend it. It really helped us to get to know our photographer and get comfortable with having professional photos taken. Because of this our wedding photos turned out amazing, and we had so much fun the whole wedding day since our photographer felt like a lifelong friend by that point. As a bonus, our photographer knew us well enough after the engagement shoot that she was able to tell when we were getting stressed and she was able to deal with whatever the issue was at the time to make the day more enjoyable for us.

So totally worth it! It gets you used to your photographer and being in front of a camera together with your fiancé. It also helps troubleshoot any issues before they arise on your wedding photos (ie, They use a filter you don’t like, or photos are too edited/not edited enough, maybe there are certain poses you find out you love or hate during your engagement shoot that you either definitely want to incorporate in your wedding photos, or definitely don’t want to do again). Originally I wasn’t planning on getting engagement photos done, but I am so glad we did now!

I didn’t get engagement pictures done, but I also didn’t have a traditional wedding. I had my ceremony in Vegas and I met the photographer literally right before I walked down the aisle and fell in love with my pictures. At my reception I won’t be having a photographer.

1,000% worth it in my opinion! For a few reasons: 1. How often do you get nice, professional pictures of you of your fiance? If you're like me, it's very rare. These are nice to use as Save The Dates or even just to have. 2. It helps you feel more comfortable both with being in front of a camera and getting to know your photographer and their style of shooting/editing. It's almost a preview of how your wedding pictures will turn out. 3. The pictures are so fun to take!! My fiance and I absolutely loved our experience with taking our engagement pictures.

An engagement shoot with your wedding photographer is likely worth it just as a practice session before your big day!

We were going to skip engagement pics. My hubby found a great Groupon deal with a new photographer so we did it. Really nice having those photos for our Save the Date and wedding website.

I had my friend do mine since she’s good at photography and had a nice camera so if it’s not something you want to spend $ on then you certainly can go that route or to find photographers giving free or discounted sessions out just so they can expand their portfolio

We did not get engagement photos originally and I was totally fine with that. But because we had to postpone our wedding to next year we decided to do something special on the day of our original wedding date and we got photos taken finally. We’re not “engagement photo kind of people” either because i think they look cheesy so I understand your apprehension and I do not plan on using the photos we got. We sent very modern save the dates and change the dates with no photos attached (because I think it’s creepy and I literally throw away a save the date if my friends face it on it...shhhh LOL). I don’t regret getting the photos taken but I also would have never gotten them taken if we didn’t have to postpone our wedding and I would have been okay with that. So I guess I agree with you, It’s an added expense for someone that’s not going to use the photos But it was a special day and a beautiful day so it was nice to have those memories captured on our “would-be wedding day”.

Definitely worth it! I totally agree with getting used to your photographer beforehand and also just getting comfortable taking professional photos and being PDA in public. FH and I turned it into a date night and went to the shooting location (local park) early with a picnic and bottle of wine to loosen up lol. She even loved our picnic setup and we have a couple “cheers” pics and fun pics with our dog. It was just so fun and romantic. And we’re planning to use the photos to display on our wedding day and for our save the dates and Christmas cards!
I’m not sure if you already have your photographer but if you’re searching a lot of them offer complimentary engagement shoots in their wedding packages (ours did and so did everyone we interviewed).

We got a discount on our engagement photos through our photographer because he is a preferred vendor for our venue and does a lot of weddings for them. We wanted to see what his work was like and if we liked him. (Good idea to get them done plus we barely had any decent photos of us to begin with) We loved him and his work and wanted him to do our wedding photos. Its basically like a hair and makeup trial but with a photographer.

Eh, we didn't do them. Our photographer offered them for a very small price, but we opted out of them. We liked the photographer's work and his vibe, so we hired him for our wedding. We've been married a year and still don't regret not doing engagement photos. I didn't find it difficult to work with him on the wedding day.

My FH didn't even want to hire a photographer for the wedding because he doesn't care about pictures and he wanted engagement photos. He thought it would be nice to use on the wedding website. We also opted for it because we literally only have one pic of the 2 of us and we're both drunk in it lol.

"It's basically like a hair and makeup trial but with a photographer," is a great way to put this! I think I actually got more out of our engagement photo shoot than I did from my hair and makeup trial, even if you don't count the pictures, which are definitely nice to have.

I got mine for free and they are nice, but I wouldn't have paid for the session. We are going to end up using our wedding pics for home decoration and Christmas cards

We didn’t get them done and don’t regret it. We’re not big into pictures of ourselves , and we got enough for a whole lifetime on our wedding day haha. Engagement photos are really not my thing and I absolutely don’t miss them.

I have heard that they’re a nice way to get comfortable with your photographer, which is a benefit. ...but, we clicked with our photographer right away, and even though I’m not a big posed photo person (they’re still my least favorite of the day), we had no issues feeling natural in front of her and following her directions. So much of it has to do with photographer’s vibe— it is good to get a feel for that ahead of time in some way or another.

    Worth it!

We used them for our STDs, but also... it's nice to have pro photos of us, in more everyday clothes.

For our 1st anniversary, we actually got a big print of one of our favorites, so we'd have more than just wedding pictures around the house.
