Election day weddings

FutureMrsB (Aussie Bride!), on January 29, 2013 at 9:43 PM Posted in Planning 0 7

Hi all,

So our silly PM has just announced the election day - 14 September 2013 - my wedding day! Has anyone had or been to an election day wedding? I will be updating my website with postal vote information for those travelling. Anything else I should take into consideration?

Election Day in the US is always on a Tuesday, so I've never been to an Election Day wedding. But I think the postal vote info is a great idea (I'm assuming it's like absentee ballots here). I also have no idea how voting works for you (or if you have to vote in specific places based on your address), but maybe polling locations close to your venue?

Definitely make sure you inform people to advance vote. Is that the same thing as postal vote? Advance voting in Canada is where they have dates about 2 weeks before the election for people to vote who won't be there that day.

That is quite advance knowledge on an election date. Most we usually get here is like 3 months for national stuff.

Yeah she has given heaps of notice - it seems she wants a drawn out campaign! Smiley sad

We have to vote in certain locations based on where we live. But you can do postal votes or vote in another location so I have to give my guests that info.

Oh and I forgot to add it is MANDATORY to vote in Australia, otherwise you get fined.

Tuesdays sound like such a better idea than Saturdays.... it ruins half your weekend!

That amazes me that you have Saturday voting. Our voting falls on Mondays through Thursdays. Most elections happen on Mondays or Tuesdays.

Not that it makes any difference, but all those options make more sense to me than a Tuesday. We were both almost late for work last time because the lines early in the morning were awfully long.

Anyway, if people have other options, it should be OK.

Find out how to pre-vote, and put it on your weddign website so people know how to do it. Polls open early so it's no big deal.

Is there anyone in the bridal party or who you are inviting who are involved in politics? If so, they might not be able to make it. Campaign seasons are looooong and brutal and exhausting, and election day itself, for those who are involved in campaigns, begins around 4:30 a.m. and doesn't end until around midnight. Not sure if it's different in Australia, but that's how it is in the U.S. I would never be able to attend a wedding in the last few weeks of October or the weekend before our Tuesday election day.

As an aside, here in CA and SF, we have early voting for many weeks before election day, as well as vote by mail. In SF there is a movement called "Why Tuesday" to add a Saturday election day in addition to the Tuesday.

ps. I think it should be mandatory to vote here as well!!
