Early wedding gifts - do you open them?

Alison, on January 8, 2021 at 11:13 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 13

We are getting married in May (fingers crossed COVID allows at least 100 people outside), and we recently sent out save the dates. Given the guest restrictions, we did ask people to let us know if they knew they wouldn't be able to attend so that we could possibly invite some people off of our B lists. We have received a few declines so far, and a few gifts, which I think may be from people who declined. Do we open them now, or do we wait until the wedding? Thank you in advance for the help!

Personally, I would open them as you receive them, and then immediately send a thank you note! Otherwise, if you wait, the person who sent the gift might be left wondering if you received it, or if it got lost in the mail, etc.

I agree with Lisa! I would open them as you receive them, then promptly write and send out thank you cards!

Agree with others; I would open them now so that you can send a Thank You note. Smiley smile

As above open now in time to check for any breakage. And an immediate Thank you note. If you have not stocked up with blank cards for thank you notes, now is the time. Unless your people give more checks than gifts , most people ship registry wedding gifts, and added to shower gifts, you may get 2/3 or more of all gifts weeks before your wedding. These should be answered as they come in so most are actually done before the wedding.

Open for warranty purposes, and send them thank you letter. If it’s electronic, try it!

No. Proper etiquette says you wait till after the wedding to open them (in case they have to be returned if the wedding is called off) but send a thank you note immediately acknowledging it.

Etiquette says to wait til after the wedding to use the gifts in case they need to be returned, but the packages should still be opened to make sure that they didn't arrive broken and so that thank you notes can be written and sent promptly.

Open them, make sure everything is okay, and send thank you notes right away.

Also, sometimes early gifts include things people expect you to use, like toasting glasses, cake servers, jewelry being passed down. Boxes of stationery, including blank cards for thank you notes, and rolls of stamps, people expect to know are found and used.
