Dyed my hair too dark!!! Help!

Z, on March 26, 2010 at 5:06 PM Posted in Planning 0 49

I bought extensions that were just a tiny bit darker than my hair. So I decided to try to dye my hair a little darker- now it's almost black!! I normally have medium brown hair with reddish tones (not ash or golden). Now the top is dark brown but the ends are almost black. What can I do to lighten in? I only have a couple weeks before the wedding!!

U have to go to a pro..trying to fix it yourself may cause more damage...

Yeah talk to a pro...but....you need to take into account that your hair will fade in a few weeks...but that doesnt mean it will even out the color if its a different color on the ends....good luck and do it as soon as possible so you have enough time to get it right....

I agree with Teresa Z. If you want it to match the extensions you definately need to go to a pro because if you keep trying to fix it yourself you'll end up damaging your hair

I was afraid of that. I really don't have any more money. Has anyone ever gone to a beauty school to have them do something for cheaper? Would shampooing and conditioning every day help it fade or would I just end up with dull color?

Very sorry Z, but you need to some up with the cash to get your hair fixed, you can try a hair school, but there is no gaurantee that the trainee will do as good as job as a seasoned professional.

Don't risk a beauty school to fix this. You could end up with NO hair. Definitely a pro.

Try washing it a bunch. I dye my hair dark often and it always comes out darker then it should... i just wash it a bunch and it eventually lightens up, i would say after about a week. maybe try that, ( like shampoo it 3-4 times a day/per shower) but scheduel an appt. for the first of april anyways and see what happens.

If u explain your situation to a pro maybe they can work out a playment plan? i mean that's a huge IF..but i know sometiem i didnt have money to get my hair done-and it needed it and my hair stylist would let me pay the next time i came in..however i was a frequent customer so she trusted me..sorry, i think i just gave you false hope... but if you have a credit card..i'd use it for this..

P.s washing it more isnt going to help..it will "dull" the color but unevenly and you dry out your hair which makes it less shiny..hunny...call a salon STAT!

If you do decide to go the school route ask for someone who is very good at coloring and close to graduating.

I think Shell's advice is basically good--I dye my hair a lot and the first few shampoos make a big difference. I'm usually happier with the color after that. Teresa is right that a BUNCH of shampoos is really just going to dull it, but try shampoo'ing like 3 times and see if that puts it where you wanted it. If not, as everyone else says, don't mess with it. You need professional help at that point.

ANTI DANDRUFF shampoo it a few times. Then decide if you need to go the salon route. It can strip the initial color a bit. Good luck- so sorry this has happened.

Try washing just the dark ends first alone before the whole head. This might pull out the extra dye at the bottom. But I would go to a professional.

There is also a product in drug stores called Color Oops I think. I don't know anything about it, and I highly recommend going to a salon. Using a clarifying shampoo or even dandruff shampoo (both have stronger detergents in them) will help fade the color a bit. Usually after a week of normal washing (no extra shampooing) the extra pigment will naturally wash out and the color will lighten on its own.

Thanks ladies! I will try the dandruff shampoo and see where that leaves me. FH is supportive of finding the money to have something done. He says he likes it and that once it fades it will look even better but if it's not the way I want for the wedding I know I'll regret it. I want to love our pictures.

The same thing happened to me last year, theres a color remover at CVS or a drug store called Color Oops, it smells terriable but it will take that color out and bring you back to the color you had before, it does dry out your hair. It worked for me in less than 20 minutes ( my hair turned black when i colored it, took me back to brown). After i washed out the color oops i left conditioner in over night with a shower cap on and it was back to normal. Hope this helps. Hair Stylist wont recommend it but its a easy fix for your hair

Oh man, that's tempting Samantha. My hair is already pretty dry so I'm worried about that.

@Z: It works thats all i can say LOL. After i did it, i actually used Aussie leave in conditioner for about a month after to, just sprayed it on the ends before i used the blow dryer, my hair is dry and always will be but every little thing helps to, plus the color oops is only around $8!
