What is the average size for a wedding gown? Is size 12 considered large?

Thanks,

Wedding gown sizes are very unusual. Im usually a 4-6 but my wedding dress was a 10 because the chest was so small and then I had to get the waist taken in. They are a small fit so I dont think there is any average every designer is different

I don't really think there is an "Average" size. So, I'm not sure what you're trying to compare yourself to...

A size 12 in pants is usually a 14/16 in Wedding (sometimes BM) dress.

I wouldn't think so. I would think that 12 is closer to average. I have a current post showing my dress, it is a 10. Most of my other clothes are size small for tops, 4's and 6's on the bottoms.... I think wedding dresses seem to run small.

I think size 12 is not large. Technically for wedding gowns, plus size is size 16W through size 30 and up?

I thought size 10 and 12 are average and sample size. Bridal gowns run small. So the size 10 and size 12 is actually street size 6 and size 8.

Take into account that the the average American woman is street size 14 and 16. Then you see that a wedding gown size 12 is small!

I know 12-14 is the average pant size for a woman which would mean 14-16 in wedding dresses.

Yeah JJ is right 14-16 is the average woman size. I wish more celeb's were ''normal'' rather than anorexic looking... That's

I wear a size 8 on a good day and my wedding gown is a size 12. My sister in law wears a size 18 and she didn't even fit in the 24 for the bm dress. It's disheartening really. BUT you look great.. you feel great. The number on the label is hideable ;-)

I had to go up to sizes to fit into my dress. My understanding is that is normal for bridal clothes. What are you normally a size eight or ten? Big? Are you kidding me Smiley smile.

I normally wear a 2. I nearly fainted when a bridal shop consultant told me I was looking at a size 8 - 12 depending on the designer. Its rediculous.

For me it depends on the bridal store. I'm a size 6-7 and I was a size 8-10 at Davids Bridal.

Sizes in formal wear are ALL different. In the past 4 years I have been:

    ~a bridesmaid- dress size 4

~mother of the bride- dress size 6

    ~bridesmaid again- dress size 10

    ~ now a bride- dress size 8

Mind you, I have weighed the same (within 5 pounds) the past 4 years......don't get it.

I'm the opp. I'm normally anywhere 16-18 and my wedding dress is a 14.

If you're hung up on the "size number" and thinking it makes you "large", then please dont... numbers are just numbers. Just like age.

Sizes vary a lot. You should also be aware that formal sizing usually runs at least one size larger than you normally wear. Whatever the size, I might add, every bride is beautiful!!!

I bought one of my wedding dresses in 12 and the other in 10 (which I couldn't fit into at the time). I was a size 10 in normal clothes when I fit the 12. Now I'm a 6-8 and I can fit into the 10. They do say that wedding dresses run 2 sizes up so if you're normally an 8, you probably wear at least a 10 or 12. I also think it depends on the cut of the dress. My size 12 was in a ball gown and size 10 in a mermaid style. If the dress is made to be tight fitting, it is very likely you have to go up a size. It really also depends on the designer just like jeans. It also varies too depending on the proportions of your body.

My sis-in-law was a size 10 on top because her chest is smaller but 12 in the waist so she would have to get the top taken in. It all depends! Don't worry about the size. As you can see here, we all bought dresses at least 1-2 sizes up.

My best friend also normally wears an 11-13 and had to buy an 18 in bridesmaid dress, one designer she almost didn't fit!

I'm a 4/6 street sizing and my wedding dress is a 10 (Mori Lee 2712). I'm 5'9, and lucked out because the sample size fit perfectly--only real alterations needed were cups sown in and a bustle added.

My bridal consultant told me that a lot of the dresses were from European designers, so their sizes are smaller than US sizes. There's so much confusion and no real "standard" for wedding dress sizes though, so an average is hard to define.
