Donuts vs Cake

Today my fiancé and I were talking cake and he said "you know, l'd love a good donut". Today my fiancé and I were talking cake and he said "you know, l'd love a good donut". I've seen 800 donut instead of cake ideas on Pinterest and told him I'd call our favorite donut shop for pricing. It's trendy, it's fun, it's a little unique. I was shocked to see the price difference.

$3.50 per serving for cake vs. $0.80 per donut.

When I called my mom to tell her of my bargain, she was less than thrilled. Claiming guests EXPECT a piece of cake. If I'm trying to throw an elegant country wedding, why would I serve donuts? If she went to a wedding with donuts, she'd think it was the cheap way out and that guests are going to remember that we didn't serve them a good piece of cake before they notice the table arrangements that could be upgraded with the savings.

Personally, I can't tell you one cake I DO remember from a wedding, so I'm not seeing the problem with this. Is it tacky? Is my mom right? Do i just get the normal cake expected?

Thank you so much for all the feedback ladies! I never thought this would be literally the one item I have lost sleep over! Lol my fiancé is 100% convinced that he wants donuts, especially after finding out where they're coming from. I told my mom our plan, more donuts, less cake, but still cake, even sent her a picture of the setup I have invissioned in my mind. She was MORE than thrilled with my compromise. My fiancé and I are stopping by this weekend and picking up a dozen of the different donut flavors. We plan on letting them sit in the open air for a few hours, just to see how they hold up.

Again, thank you ladies. Your advise, concerns, and expertise is greatly appreciated. I'm so happy we found a way to have our cake and eat it too in this situation. (All puns intended)

I love all sweets, so I love both cake and donuts Smiley smile I love how wedding cakes look visually and the designs you can do, but I'd be way more excited to see donuts at a wedding because it is fun and a break from the norm!

Also - (unpopular opinion) - DH and I hated the cake-cutting photos. It was SO weird and awkward, and we only have super awkward pictures of it! It was one of those traditions that I didn't really think about, then when we went to do it we both wish we had skipped it.

I think you've come to a great decision on having a little bit of both Smiley smile

I am team cake as well. Donuts are great and yummy, but not for a wedding.

Honestly, donuts make me sick. I am not sure if it's the dough or the frying but I just can't eat them. Team cake all the way.

We are having donuts at my wedding instead of a cake! There is a pretty well known donut place in town that everyone loves! We thought it was unique and we can multiple different flavors!

I think cake is just so pretty and elegant at a wedding and we loved ours. Personally I don't like or eat donuts and wouldn't eat one at a wedding, especially for dessert. That's said, I wouldn't care if that was the option or even think much of it.

I say do what you like! You could do a small cutting cake in addition. It would still be cheaper. Cake is expensive and if you don't really want it.....

I'm having donuts! A small cake for my FH and i to cut, for tradition's sake, but donuts for everyone else! I love the idea and super excited about. Our wedding is more on the formal/elegant side... so we also want to incorporate a dessert bar.

I'd do the donuts! If you're worried about not having cake though do mini cupcakes as well as donuts. Bigger ones are awkward to eat but mini ones work great!

    I am team cake...

However, I can have cake, donuts, pie, cupcakes, or anything else whenever I want it. All I have to do is stop by my local bakery. This is one of those things that you as a couple get to choose. Yes, people might talk or think it is odd but it is completely up to you. I had a family member tell me once that if I had cupcakes instead of a regular cake everyone in the community would gossip about me. It isn't tacky or breaking etiquette to have something other than cake so you are all good there. It is less formal than a traditional wedding cake but it depends on what type of style your wedding is anyway. It isn't my style but if it is what you want then in this case I say go for it!

ETA: If you go with donuts then don't have a "cake just for the bride and groom to cut" because then that does become rude and tacky to have cake just for your purpose but not for others who might want it. I prefer cake and if I had to watch someone cut a cake and then not get to have any myself I would be a little grumpy...

I love (LOOOOOVE) cake so donuts would be a slight disappointment for me. However, I would still eat the shit out of a donut or two with just as much haste. For some reason, I can forgive myself more easily for wedding cake because of the occasion. I would judge the shit out of myself for a donut. Not sure that really helps.

Cute idea! Maybe if they are gourmet donuts, they'll seem more 'elegant'

I love the idea of donuts instead of a giant cake for the reception. I am planning on having a small cutting cake and then a "donut bar" and maybe some other sheet cakes. How many donuts do you recommend buying for about 100 guests? If there are other dessert options, what is the best number to go with?

I'm more of a traditionalist when it comes to weddings. I still appreciate the romanticism and formality that set it apart from other occasions. For me, that's seeing groomsmen in tuxedos, the bride in her wedding gown, fresh flowers and a beautiful wedding cake. I do love creative decorating ideas and themes. And although I'm a fan of donuts for breakfast, I think it's too casual in lieu of a wedding cake. I feel the same way about pie in lieu of a wedding a cake. Just my opinion.
