Donuts vs Cake

Today my fiancé and I were talking cake and he said "you know, l'd love a good donut". I've seen 800 donut instead of cake ideas on Pinterest and told him I'd call our favorite donut shop for pricing. It's trendy, it's fun, it's a little unique. I was shocked to see the price difference.

$3.50 per serving for cake vs. $0.80 per donut.

When I called my mom to tell her of my bargain, she was less than thrilled. Claiming guests EXPECT a piece of cake. If I'm trying to throw an elegant country wedding, why would I serve donuts? If she went to a wedding with donuts, she'd think it was the cheap way out and that guests are going to remember that we didn't serve them a good piece of cake before they notice the table arrangements that could be upgraded with the savings.

Personally, I can't tell you one cake I DO remember from a wedding, so I'm not seeing the problem with this. Is it tacky? Is my mom right? Do i just get the normal cake expected?

I would love to attend a wedding with donuts instead of cake. I would do this at my own wedding except for the fact it's a DW and wasn't given that option with the resort we are having it in and wouldn't know how to navigate researching places knowing I won't be able to try ahead of time

We're doing donuts! We're not big on cakes, serving is easier, it's cheaper, and FH is a cop so I thought it would be funny Smiley smile I just don't know what size stand to get or if I will need more than one.

Cake. Donuts are for the police with coffee. Cupcakes are for Suzy's birthday party.

Probably an unpopular opinion, but I don't like cake. I'd love to attend a wedding with donuts!

ETA: I am having cake, but cookie tables are everything where I am from.

@Elizabeth K Im not sure why they would. Cake slices are usually cut in the back kitchen only the 1st slice is cut in front of guests for the photos. Even so, not sure why a guest would ask for a specific tier unless they were under the impression it was of a different flavor.

Maybe unpopular opinion but if you can do gourmet donuts why not ?! Sounds way yummier than cake to me. However when we considered this option donuts that were wedding worthy were 2 a piece and at that point for space saving and convenience we just stuck with traditional cake

Wedding cakes are one of those things that people put way too much emphasis on imo. I personally dont remember one cake at any wedding I've attended. Some people ooo and ahhh over it. It comes down to what YOU feel is important. We have a local bakery doing a dessert bar with 9 different options! They make bite sized desserts so there will be enough for each guest to have 3 and take leftovers in cute containers on their way out! My fiance and I aren't big on cake and the idea of a generic "cake cutting" photo op just isn't who we are. Instead we are putting the money we would have used for a personal cake toward an open bar for our guests. Do what feels right to you! The best weddings I've been to were original and true to the couple. I knew from the beginning I didn't want my guests walking away from another carbon copy wedding.

We are doing donuts! Our venue is known for the donuts they make on site. Cake is good, but I've had better cake from the grocery store than at most weddings I've been to. There are lots of donut shops that do fancy donuts these days, not just Krispy Kremes (which are still delicious lol). To me it's more or less about whether or not there is some kind of dessert.

Def go with what you prefer. Cake is expected but then again anything that screams dessert

FH and I both hate cake, so I am pretty positive we will have a different dessert.

As long as dessert is offered I see no reason why it needs to be a traditional wedding cake.

I would LOVE donuts instead of a cake at a wedding. Honestly, although most people expect a cake, most don't even touch it. I feel like donuts would be a big hit.

    Marlene, you said:

"You may want to get at least a small cake for photos and make the bottom tiers a prop, if you want best of both worlds, because yes cake is fancier than donuts. This is usually very cost efficient and visually appealing for the photos. Fair compromise, I think."

So my question is, if you buy a cake for photos, what are you going to do if your guests want cake and your cake won't feed all the ones who want a slice because the bottom tiers are a prop? If you do a cake for photos, you need to serve cake to your guests. If you plan to go with donuts (a mistake, in my opinion), then live without your cake cutting photo.

Kelsey, this may be UO, but I totally relate to you right now. I've tasted 5+ companies cakes and have been less than thrilled, We love donuts though but the donut bars are less visually appealing to me than a beautiful wedding cake. My mom is very Pro-wedding cake even though we were satisfied for a 8" round for cutting and pictures... What we have seem to settled on is a flaming donut bar (basically made to order, sautéed in butter, brown sugar and rum) and guests do their own toppings, and a ~50 serving 2 tier cake. We only expect 75 guests at are wedding but will provide the option for guests to choose but I really feel that there will still be a ton of cake left over, but it will be there for the visual aspect, tradition and cake eaters.

P.S. Sams club makes 3 tier wedding cakes for $65, maybe you could compromise with your mom, too!

    I'd prefer a cake.

Not sure if it is cheaper as you have several flavours, I will be eating one of each. Keep that in mind lol.

I'm in the exact same predicament! I LOVE donuts and I think it would be so much fun and unique at a wedding. I feel like most people don't even eat the cake, but I'm pretty sure most people would eat a donut.

But my FMIL had the same reaction..... she was less than thrilled. Kinda a bummer but hey it's my wedding, so I think I'm gonna go the donut route anyways Smiley smile

I've never been to a wedding with donuts but growing up we had donuts every Sunday. My concern would be that a donut that sits out in the air for 5 hours gets stale and doesn't taste great. Also I think of donuts as a breakfast food and cake as an evening food. I go to a wedding craving cake and a donut just wouldn't fill the void. That being said, I would still eat the donuts. Maybe an option would be donuts and sheet cake. You don't even have to show off the cake, just have it magically appear. I think sheet cake is probably around the cost of the donuts per slice so you'd still be less than a traditional cake with donuts and cake
