Donuts vs Cake

Kelsey, on March 8, 2017 at 5:59 PM Posted in Planning 1 78

Today my fiancé and I were talking cake and he said "you know, l'd love a good donut". I've seen 800 donut instead of cake ideas on Pinterest and told him I'd call our favorite donut shop for pricing. It's trendy, it's fun, it's a little unique. I was shocked to see the price difference.

$3.50 per serving for cake vs. $0.80 per donut.

When I called my mom to tell her of my bargain, she was less than thrilled. Claiming guests EXPECT a piece of cake. If I'm trying to throw an elegant country wedding, why would I serve donuts? If she went to a wedding with donuts, she'd think it was the cheap way out and that guests are going to remember that we didn't serve them a good piece of cake before they notice the table arrangements that could be upgraded with the savings.

Personally, I can't tell you one cake I DO remember from a wedding, so I'm not seeing the problem with this. Is it tacky? Is my mom right? Do i just get the normal cake expected?

I do think donuts are significantly less elegant than cake, since they are typically eaten with your hands instead of with a fork. But that doesn't mean they aren't delicious! If they fit with the vibe you are envisioning then go for it!

I'm doing donuts and a coffee cart for after dinner. We are having a small cutting cake and then also getting sheet cakes from a local bakery that are also delicious, but cheaper. We expect most of our guests to enjoy the donuts, but we are providing vanilla and chocolate cake for those who would prefer.

I feel like most guests expect a dessert and if the dessert is donuts then so be it!!!! I would be more concerned though with it feeling weird with the rest of your meal. If you do a breakfast themed meal I would definitely be loving the donuts, but if it was donuts with a bbq dinner it would feel weird. If you're main concern is money I think it's becoming more popular to do desserts besides cake that could save you though!!!!

I would eat a donut before cake. I didn't want cake either. When I told my mom she almost died. Good thing the cake is included in the venue.

    I say do the donuts!

I had a friend do a donut tower at her wedding, which was at a Chinese restaurant. It wasn't an elegant wedding, but I did enjoy about three donuts. I think it's just a personal decision.

I LOVE the idea of donuts! Who doesn't love a delicious donut! Out of all of the weddings I've attended in the past few years, I've maybe eaten the cake at 1. Not everyone eats or likes cake. Plus if you have any sort of filling some people might not like that either. For us, a cake would be a waste so we went with bread pudding for our "cake cutting" and then cookies for everyone else!

Do what you want. Honestly we are having a small cake to cut and a dessert assortment. I think it'll be a fun and yummy treat for your guest.

I love the ideas of the donut tiers! If it was dunkin donuts, I would say that it was not elegant. However, by providing bakery quality, unique donuts I think it is a nice touch.

I say go for the donuts!

Honestly I think it's ridiculous for someone to get upset about the dessert. Like you're at a wedding, are you really gonna bitch if you don't get cake!?!?

I would be perfectly OK with donuts. I think the big difference is people usually think of donuts as a breakfast item and cake as a dessert.

Here's the thing. You only get one wedding, and therefore one opportunity to get a wedding cake. You get a breakfast every day. Donuts are fabulous and delicious, but they're not special like a wedding cake. I had donuts this morning, and LOVED them, but I'd never consider doing them in lieu of cake at my wedding.

Some of my absolute favorite photos from my wedding are of my husband and I drinking champagne and cutting the wedding cake. Its a special moment that will happen once in a lifetime that you cannot get back. (Besides the fact that that donut tower just isn't elegant like a cake is.)

What about having a dessert table with donuts on it, AND a wedding cake? Or donuts as an end of the night snack? Or as favors? I feel like those are good compromises.

@Mrs.D I appreciate this... it makes a lot of sense to me. I really think this is what my mom was trying to get across, just had a hard time of expressing.

I'd pick doughnuts over cake. Especially if you get a good variety, that way everyone can get something they like! Smiley smile

Give me all the cake. Donuts are Tuesday. Cake is special event. Donuts get gross when they sit out in the air for a while. Cake has frosting to keep that in check. And don't forget, it's decor too.

    I want cake now.
