Donuts vs Cake

Today my fiancé and I were talking cake and he said "you know, l'd love a good donut". Today my fiancé and I were talking cake and he said "you know, l'd love a good donut". I've seen 800 donut instead of cake ideas on Pinterest and told him I'd call our favorite donut shop for pricing. It's trendy, it's fun, it's a little unique. I was shocked to see the price difference.

$3.50 per serving for cake vs. $0.80 per donut.

When I called my mom to tell her of my bargain, she was less than thrilled. Claiming guests EXPECT a piece of cake. If I'm trying to throw an elegant country wedding, why would I serve donuts? If she went to a wedding with donuts, she'd think it was the cheap way out and that guests are going to remember that we didn't serve them a good piece of cake before they notice the table arrangements that could be upgraded with the savings.

Personally, I can't tell you one cake I DO remember from a wedding, so I'm not seeing the problem with this. Is it tacky? Is my mom right? Do i just get the normal cake expected?

Team Cake. How are the donuts going to taste after sitting out for hours? (maybe do a trial run and eat a donut that is sitting in the open air for about 5 hours)

My FH is from Northeast OH and so far I have been told we need 3 8foot tables for cookies!!! But besides that, we are doing a small one tier cake to cut, lots of pie and apparently even more cookies. As long as there is dessert I am happy! Just make sure to have the hot coffee/tea to go with the sweets Smiley smile

I love cake so I'm always team cake BUT I will be having cake and donuts at our wedding. Yum.

But honestly, I think it's fine if you just had donuts. Anything with sugar is awesome to me! (:

Personally FH and I aren't really big on cake so we're offering a few different desserts we do love...cheesecake, at least 2 different types of pie a, cookie assortment and our main dessert is a donut tower since donuts are our absolute favorite. We're still deciding on the bakery to provide the donuts but we're offering at least 3 or 4 different flavors and they will be served on this custom donut stand I ordered on etsy! We might have a small cake as the top tier so we have something to cut into :-)

Fits our overall wedding and the bonus is its a hell of a lot cheaper than a proper wedding cake!

We're likely doing donut tiers with a small cake to cut on top. FH doesn't like cake and I love donuts (plus they're way cheaper!), so it was the natural option for us. It helps that there's an AWESOME donut place near us that has experience making these donut "cakes" for weddings.

Your inspo pic is not visually appealing to me. But other than that as a guest, I will tell you the cake is more for the traditional "cake cutting" photos. Most guest don't even eat cake either due to preference or medical diagnosis. With that said, I do love donuts so I can see why this would make your wedding unique and many guest may like it. Additionally, you would save a lot which is always great. Yeah, some guest will talk behind your back but if its not this it will be something else. No one will 100% love your wedding. So if you like it I say go for it. This is not tacky. Tacky is cash bar, honey-fund, potluck, etc.

You may want to get at least a small cake for photos and make the bottom tiers a prop, if you want best of both worlds, because yes cake is fancier than donuts. This is usually very cost efficient and visually appealing for the photos. Fair compromise, I think.

Your mom is right. Donuts and elegant don't go together. At all.

If you really want to incorporate donuts somehow, I'd serve them as a late-night snack, not as dessert.

ETA: Marlene, what happens if a guest asks for a slice of that prop?

I personally am not a fan of donuts. I do not like the texture. When I think weddings, I think cake.

I'm doing donuts! My FH loved the idea so that's what we are doing. We are having a backyard wedding so I feel it's fitting for our wedding.

Team cake. I agree with an earlier poster, you only get one shot with a wedding cake. You can have donuts anytime. They do look good in that pic though!

Donuts all the way. I personally don't even like cake and you can totally eat a donut with a fork if it bothers you so much to eat it with your hands. I think people honestly think that their friends and family suddenly become these posh wedding experts when they walk into a wedding- too good for donuts?! Donuts are too good for you!

Team Cake here. I love donuts, but I can get them in a drive thru any day of the week. If I'm going to a wedding, I'm looking forward to wedding cake. Donuts as a favor would make me happy, though, as long as they're nice and fresh!

We may do donuts too. I originally wanted a cake. FH doesn't like cake and wants pie. But, both of us love donuts. Go for it!

I'm not a big cake fan so I rarely eat it at weddings. But FH loves cake so we will have a simple one. I love donuts! I think you're fine as long as you have dessert for guests. I like the idea of having both or a variety.

Maybe your mom is thinking like a box of dunkin donuts. That would look cheep but the ones you pictured look AMAZING!

We are doing cupcakes not cake for our wedding. Times are changing my mom needed to be convinced on cupcakes because in her time it was only cake.

It's not about "mom's time" or "times are changing". It's about budget.

Donuts at a wedding...funny the last time I heard the joke about off-duty cops, they were drinking coffee and downing those 80 cent donuts, not eating a slice of art -- a beautifully decorated, once in a lifetime cake.

The wedding cake is a part of the traditional wedding. Usually, it's so beautiful, that it sits in a central place in the reception area until it's cut and served. People photograph it. A pile of donuts -- yeah, I'm sure they taste good (like donuts), but even on tiered trays, they, and their cousins, the cupcakes, are pretty average. In fact, they live in bins at every Dunkin Donuts. They aren't elegant. They aren't pieces of art. They're just donuts.

Sorry, I'm with mom. You have one reason in your life to have a wedding cake. You can pick up donuts every day of the week, via a drive-thru window.

I'm #teamcake. Donuts at weddings is a trend I don't particularly understand. I'd be incredibly underwhelmed to see a big ol' pile of donuts at a wedding....but to each their own.
