My FH and I are getting married on Christmas Eve this year. We have everything we need for a home as we have lived together for more then 3 years. Is it ok to ask for donations In lieu of gifts? ***edit** seems I worded that wrong. People are welcome to come however everyone has said they can't make it

    NOOOOO!!!!

Go ahead with this if you want to come across as rude, greedy, and insane. It's bad enough when a couple asks their guests for money; you're not even having any guests!

I like the site though; it gives you places to donate to people who really need help....like um, almost everyone in the Phillappines.....

Can this post get flagged for soliciting? Methinks this is soliciting.

Oh, and let me add... if you can't save the $300 you're asking for to get married in Vegas, I'd hate to see what happens when you have a true financial emergency. You can get married at the courthouse for cheap -- in FL, with the license, you're out $125. And if that's also a problem, well... no one should start off married life on such shaky financial footing.

I don't think she's asking us to contribute to the GoFundMe. I think that was included so we could see what she's showing her guests.

No, it's not a good idea to ask your guests to pay for the wedding. But no need to attack or flag the OP, in my opinion.

Thank you Jessica. I wasn't asking anyone on here to donate only showing what I was showing my friends and family. I can see this was the wrong place to ask fellow brides for an opinion that I thought I would get without being dragged through the mud.

Wow...you had a bad idea no need to get butt hurt.

You asked for an opinion and got one. You should never ask people for money so you can get married.

I would think that after a month of getting no donations to your wedding, you'd kinda get the idea that maybe it's not the best way to go about things.

And when you ask on a forum where the majority of brides are working within their means and not asking for help, you're going to rile people up asking for "donations" to something that is completely unnecessary. It's no one else's job to pay for things YOU want.

If you can't even afford to go to Vegas to have your wedding then you really shouldn't be going...regardless of if these people are coming, it's rude to ask

How on earth did you think that would be a good idea??! Are you planning on sending a Save the Date with your gofundme account or how were you going to get the word out when NOBODY is invited?

Mrs. Cornish, if you really want to get married in Vegas but can't afford the trip, I'd suggest pushing the trip back (since the date under you name is in little more than a month). Then putting a savings plan in place to try to garner at least a couple hundred bucks each month, and talk to your friends and family about forgoing Xmas or Birthday gifts to instead help you make your monetary goal. Talking to them face to face will be more considerate and personal than an email notice or something.

Set the monetary goal, and hopefully it should be easier to stick to knowing that at the end of it you'll be getting married!

Living Social and GroupOn are great options for discounted Vegas hotel rates. Spending money can be pricey, but Vegas is actually sorta cheap to fly to and stay in, cuz they expect to get the rest of your money in other ways!
