We have been receiving our RSVP cards for the past two weeks with no drama or surprises at all until we opened yesterday's batch. One of John's friends wrote on the response card

" We will be bringing our dog Bruce along to stay for the week, since we see on the website that the Mark Twain House (our venue) is pet friendly." What? Are they kidding? The venue does permit you to bring one dog if you pay an extra $100 a week, but we are not even bringing our own dog down and we certainly did not make the option available to our guests. John will be letting them know that Bruce is uninvited and they will need to make other arrangements for him. So far we have no PEOPLE adding themselves to the guest list, but we do have one DOG. I hope the surprises stop here!

If it were a hotel I could totally see how the guests would be ok bringing their dog. But with a shared house it's a different story. I would call to chat before getting upset. It is possible they assumed you chose a pet friendly place bc you were bringing your dog. I don't know your friends but I'd hope to chalk it up to an innocent, though thoughtless, mistake on their end.

I think when there are DWs and guests are staying a long time you end up with these kind of weird issues where you need to try to accommodate more than an at home wedding. Of course I'm not saying you are required to figure out their dog situation, but I don't think having a pet issue for a week long DW situation is disgusting. If you were going to say you can't bring your kids to Punta Cana for a week, well ok that would def be insane & disgusting.

Anyway, off my tangent....I agree with Barbara that you should just call and explain you're not bringing your own dog & will not be having any in the house but then give her the info of other nearby hotels she can bring Bruce to.

Sorry I don't see the big deal? I googled the venue and literally the first link says pet friendly.. I don't think their assumption that it was okay was that far fetched. Maybe they thought you specifically chose that venue for that reason since it's says it in the description plus they are staying over several nights...?

My boss brought his dog to the church and the reception. She sat in the church and then partied with us at the reception. it was pretty fun.

Update: John spoke to his friend today. He and his wife are coming for the week. Bruce is staying home. When they checked the website and saw pet friendly, they did not notice it said one pet only, and assumed we would be bringing our dog and would want other guests to do the same. They understand where we are coming from in our decision not to have any pets down for the week. So all is good. Crisis averted. Thanks to all of you for your feedback and advice.
